11 Liberators Blast
Big Plant in Burma By the Associated Press. UNITED STATES 10th AIR FORCE HEADQUARTERS, Oct. 16. —Eleven Liberator bombers Thurs day heavily damaged the Jaoanese held Irrawaddy Flotilla Co. plant at Rangoon—the largest single concern in Burma—and then shot down three of 12 attacking enemy fight ers during an hour-long battle, headquarters announced today. At the cost of one Liberator, the Americans downed two Zeros and an 1-45 (twin-engined fighter), probably destroyed another 1-45 and two additional Zeros, and damaged two I-45s and two Zeros, the an nouncement said. The Rangoon target was one of a series at which Thursday raids were directed and in which more than 75 tons of bombs were dropped. The shipping company's yards were blanketed by bursts, starting many fires. Other targets were railway yards at Kemmendine, near Rangoon, and at Henzada, an Irrawaddy River ferry crossing 30 miles noith of Shwebo, buildings and docks at Kyaukmyaung, and Japanese bar racks at Kyaukpyu on Ramree Is land.
