Col. Carl R. Borkland (left), Army Air Forces resident representative, and Myron B. Gordon, vice president and general manager of Wright Aeronautical Corp., inspect a Wright Cyclone-18, new 2.200 horsepower type motor which the Wright company yesterday announced recently has been developed. More powerful than the Wright Cyclone engines which are used in Flying Fortresses, the new type already is in quantity production for use in heavy, long-range bombers, fighters and transports, according to the Wright organization. —- jtlm___ New Plane Engine Of Record Power Now in Production By the Associ«ted Prefn. NEW YORK, Nov. 13.—Quantity : production of an air-cooled radial i Wright Cyclone engine of 2.200 I horsepower, more powerful than the ! Cyclones which power Flying Fort resses. was announced today. Myron B. Gordon, vice president and general manager of the Wright Aeronautical Corp. of Paterson, N. J., made the announcement which he said had been approved by the War Department. Asserting the new engine, called Cyclone-18, develops the highest engine horsepower figure ever per mitted to be published by the War Department, Mr. Gordon said. ‘’We hope that use of the Cyclone-18 to increase the bomb load and range for attacks on German and Japanese bases will cut down invasion re sistance and bring an early end to the war.” Used in Constellation. The new engine. Mr. Gordon said, made its first transport appearance in a 60-passenger, Jour-engined Lockheed <C-69> Constellation, orig- I inall.v ordered by Transcontinental and Western Air and Pan American; Airways, but now to be operated for1 the Army Transport Command. He' said the power unit was designed! for use in heavy, long-range comb-I ers, fighters and transports. The engine packed its power into! a 55-inch diameter, the same as that on the original nine-cylinder; cyclone introduced in 1927, with a rating of 525 horsepower, Mr. Gor- : don said. He described the new engine as having 18 cyclinders, built j in two banks of 9 cylinders each, with a displacement of 3,350 cubic! inches. Has New Features. Mr. Gordon said construction fea-; tures of the new power unit, whose1 weight is fractionally over 1 pound I per horsepower, included a nose section df special design to permit use of a close-fitting cowl, alum inum alloy c.vclinder heads and nltroalloy steel cylinder barrels, steel crankcase and use of lightweight magensium in nose section and supercharger housing. Wright engineers, he said, had de signed a reduction gear system with what is probably the lowest ratio used on any aircraft engine and Installed a two-speed, gear-driven supercharger that maintains a high output up to stratospheric levels. The engine was put through ex tensive flight tests before being placed in quantity production, in cluding a special 150-hour run specified by the Army as a model test, Mr. Gordon said. The clerks and their price panel assistants have been successful In keeping price control on the com munity level, Miss Ellsworth said at a meeting of the price clerks yesterday. Miss Ellsworth, formerly price ex ecutive in the Camden (N. J.) dis trict office, has been a pioneer in the organization of price panels in this region, and she described some of the early organizational problems encountered to the district price clerks at their meeting. She referred to the price control work in Washington as being es pecially important, since many look to the Nation's Capital for leader ship in patriotic activity, and she pointed out that the progress of the work here was. facilitated by the compactness of the areas in whit* the boards work. * Miss Ellsworth, whose co-ordinat ing activities embrace priqe panels and price-panel assistants on 610 boards in Region 2, said the most important initial step in establish ing the price-control organizations has been developing community realization of the Importance of the price panels to the anti-infla tion program. While progress has been made in establishing the price panels on a functioning basis in tlje 610 boards, the general overall picture Is still not nearly what It should be, she said. Miss Ellsworth spent the after noon conferring with Sherwood Dodge, District price executive and Mrs. Jean Putnam, District price panel1 co-ordinator.
