Tlie Germans are playing a strange political game in Albania, where they have prepared the way for the return to the throne of Prince William of Wied. He was the first ruler of modern Albania, from March to September, 1914. Democracy Is the word the Ger mans in Albania swear by. Since the Italian surrender, the Nazis have wiped out all the Fascist trappings introduced by Italy after the conquest of Albania in 1939— the Fascist party, the Fascist in signia (which was made a part of the Albanian flag), and the Fascist Chamber of Corporations. Events in Albania have impor tance for the Allies, because the Adriatic country would be a factor in an Invasion operation into the Balkans. The Germans are esti mated to have four divisions there, FOR A GENERATION THE SPECIALTY SHOP FOR SMART YOUNG WOMEN-1 THIRTEENTH • BETWEEN E AND F / li he likes yon He'll love you in this! The British maintain a liaison officer with the Albanian guerrillas. Hull Cites Awareness. "The Government and people of the United States have been con stantly aware of the struggle of the Albanian people to preserve the integrity and independence of their country,” Secretary of State Hull wrote Charles C. Hart, former American Minister to Albania, it was disclosed today. He added: “Although the Albanian people have no free governmental organ ization abroad to symbolize their national aspirations, we recognize in their national will the same ideals and the same principles that inspire us, along with the other United Nations, to prosecute to the end the war that will wipe out the scourge of Naziism. We look to them for a united front against the common enemy.” The steps in the German prep aration for the restitution of the monarchy in Albania began with uncontrolled elections to Parliament held in October, when approximately 65 members were chosen—including representatives from the new dis tricts added to Albania under Nazi aegis from Greece, Yugoslavia and Bulgarian Macedonia. Konitza Gets Post. The next step was the creation of a regency council, appointed with the consent of the Parliament. Its head is Mehdi Prasheri, former prime minister of King Zog, and its minister of foreign affairs is Mehmet Konitza, brother of the late Paik Konitza, who was Albanian Minister here. The office of foreign affairs was abolished by the Italians but restored by the Germans. The council governs in the ab sence of a king, and Prince William is said to be the choice. He was forced to leave Albania in Septem ber, 1914, but never abdicated. He now is living in Germany after a considerable stay in Rumania, where he retired in exile because of his disagreement with the Nazi policies in Germany. Until a few days ago Prince Wil liam was one of three men claiming i the Albanian throne. Another is former King Zog, in exile in Eng land. A third is King Victor Em manuel of Italy, who was emperor of Albania until December 1, when the Badoglio government reportedly withdrew the title from him. Albania is useful economically to the Nazis through its production of oil and chromium. However, opposi tion to the Nazis is energetic, and the guerrillas of Albania are in com munication with Greek and Yugo slav forces. 51 District Selectees To Report Tomorrow Fifty-one District selectees now on their postinduction furlough will report for active duty In the armed forces tomorrow.
