Caledonian Businessman
Says Troops Are Welcome
Ey the Associated Press.
NOUMEA, New Caledonia, Jan. 5.
—New Caledonia's Governor was not
expressing the opinion of the ma
jority of Caledonian citizens when
he criticized American troops and
American administration of this
French island, says Nicolas (Tibby)
Hagen, leading businessman and
one of the best-known figures in
the South Pacific.
“Christian Laigret had been here
for only a couple of months as our
acting Governor,” Hagen said. “He
was hardly qualified to speak for
those of us who make our home
here. We like our American visitors,
welcome their presence and have no
complaints to make.”
Gov. Laigret. at a recent press
conference, criticized the conduct
of American troops, said Noumea
residents particularly objected to the
presence of American colored sol
diers, American monopoly of Nou
mea docks and warehouses and es
tablishment of American nonprofit
canteens where they might compete
with Noumea shops. Americans said
the shops were charging exorbitant
prices.
