NEW BEDFORD, Mass., Jan. 22.— Born in slavery on a North Carolina plantation 104 years ago, Mrs. Char lotte Ann Winborne died today at her home. A slave worker in cotton fields until she was 24 years old, Mrs. Winborne often recalled incidents of the slave days and skirmishes be tween Union and Confederate troops. She was freed by Lincoln’s Procla mation of Emancipation, and soon after left her home State on a Yankee gunboat. Six children, five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild survive. Seeds, 88, Dies; Was Bridge Contractor Ey the Associated Press. PHILADELPHIA, Jan. 22.—Enos Larkin Seeds, Philadelphia con tractor who built several bridges in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, died today at his home after a long illness. He was 88. In the 1880s and 1890s Mr. Seeds operated a Texas ranch, Grassland, which later became the site of a town named tat it in Lynn County. Col. S. C. Harrison Dies at Walter Reed Col. Samuel Charles Harrison, 60, who served in the Army from the World War until his retirement in February, 1942, died here yesterday after a two-year illness. A native of Lake City, Fla. Col. Harrison was a member of the Florida Legislature in 1916. He served as a colonel in the Florida National Guard, and was mustered in with the first Florida regiment for service in the last war. He later went overseas as commander of the 116th Field Artillery. After the war, Col. Harrison was stationed in Hawaii from 1921 to 1924, and from 1935 to 1939 in the Philippine Islands, where he was on the staff of Gen. Douglas MacArthur. In 1939 Col. Harrison was awarded a Distinguished Service Medal by the Philippine Army for his part in its development. Later he W'as commanding officer of the Dodd Field Reception Center, San Antonio, Tex. He retired when his health broke and came here for treatment at Walter Reed Hospital. Col. Harrison is survived by his wife, Mrs. Josephine E. Harrison, and two sons, Capt. Samuel C. Har rison, jr„ stationed at Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Md., and Lt. Col. Frank H. Harrison, Fort Benning, Ga. Col. and Mrs. Harrison were residents of Jacksonville, Fla., for many years. Mrs. Bertha Heustis Dies; Former D. C. Resident Mrs. Bertha Lincoln Heustis, for mer resident of the District and widow of Dr. James H. Heustis, died Friday at her home in Dubuque. Iowa, after a long illness, according to word received here. Funeral services will be held today in Dubuque, with burial later In Arlington Cemetery. Mrs. Heustis formerly lived here with her family on Corcoran street. Her father, the late Charles P. Lin coln, was in the United States con sular service and served in Japan, China, Belgium and other countries. The refrigerator manufacturers were told by Mr. Wilson that pro duction cannot be resumed until the military situation is clearer. He added, “There is no way of telling when that will be.” The group, however, discussed problems which must be overcome in the conversion of the industry to normal opera tions. Hooe, 72. widow of a former Washington attorney and daughter of a former Governor of Maine, died at Greenwich Hospital today after a long illness. Her father, Nelson Dlngley, repre sented Maine in Congress after he [held the governorship. He had been a member of the House for about 30 years, serving for part of that time as chairman of the Ways and Means Committee, when he died in 1890. Mrs. Hooe lived in New Haven for 30 years after the death of her hus band, James C. Hooe, in 1910. Since 1941 she had lived here with a daughter, Mrs. John D. Garrison.
