Likely This Spring,
Meat Institute Says

CHICAGO, Feb. 28.—Shortages of
better grades of beef are likely to
occur In some sections of the coun
try during the spring and “probably
will be accelerated materially by
black market operations,” the
American Meat Institute predicts.
The institute said in a survey of
the meat and livestock situation
that marketing of cattle in the
early spring is expected to be con
siderably reduced from present
levels.
“Our general analysis,” the in
stitue stated, “indicates the supply
of beef for the entire year will be
as large as in 1943, but this year, as
happened last year, shortages of
better grades of beef are expected
during April, May and June.”
Pork supplies during the spring
and summer are likely to be con
siderably higher than last year, the
Institute said. It made no forecast
on the veal and lamb supply, which
normally is a very small part of
total meat consumption,
i The institute gave these reasons
for the anticipated smaller beef
supply:
1. There were 16 per cent fewer
cattle in mid-Western feed lots on
January 1, 1944, than a year pre
vious. Those cattle either have been
marketed or now are being
marketed after a short period of
feeding on grain. Normally, such
cattle are fed for a longer period
and reach the market in the spring
months.
2. Cattlemen will be reluctant to
sell range cattle during the spring,
because they can be fed on grass in
the Western range States.
3. The shortage probably will be
accelerated vby “black market”
operations, “as was the case last
spring when shortages were caused
on the East Coast, the West Coast
and in Texas.”

continue its relief to peoples of
more than a score of warn-tom
nations will be made to more than
19,000 Catholic churches throughout
the United States by the Bishops'
War Emergency and Relief Com
mittee of the National Catholic Wel
fare Conference on Sunday, March
19, it was announced today.
Marking the bishops’ fourth ap
peal for funds to finance relief for
the innocent victims of war, the
announcement came from the ad
ministrative board of the NCWC. A
total of $1,293,000 was collected last
year.
The Holy See, being a neutral
agent, has been able to get relief
to the distressed peoples of many
occupied countries who otherwise
could not be reached. Among na
tions aided by the fund are Poland,
China, the Baltic States, Hawaii,
Malta, Greece, North Africa, Italy,
the Middle East and refugees in
Spain, Portugal, India. Prance and
the Balkans. American prisoners
of war in Germany, Japan and the
Philippines also are reached.
The committee also supplied two
tons of books, as well as mass kits,
medical supplies and comfort ar
ticles in 40 cases which were shipped
recently aboard the exchange ship
Gripsholm. The articles went to
American war prisoners and civilian
internees in Japanese-dominated
territory.

Newly perfected life-saving equip
ment for shipwrecked sailors, air
personnel forced down at sea or for
service units isolated on the desert
or in the jungle, is now on exhibi
tion in the foyer of the National
Museum, Tenth street and Consti
tution avenue N.W. j
Much of this equipment was de
veloped by men in the armed forces
as well as civilians under the Emer
gency Rescue Equipment Section of
the Co-ordinator of Research and
Development of the Navy. i
It includes chemicals which will
take the salt out of sea water, a
balsa wood float capable of sup
porting 25 men, rubber life rafts
which are inflated by a flask con
taining carbon dioxide, exposure
suits, emergency rations and even
mirrors which can be flashed ac
curately up to 10 miles.
Packed in the life rafts are water
proof containers holding a first aid
kit, two smoke grenades, four mos
quito headnets, pyrotechnic projec
tor and six Very cartridges, a can
of flourescein dye sea marker which,
when released on the water, forms
a large yellow-green patch up to 5
miles and lasting for three hours:
four packages of rations and eight
cans of water. j
One of the most important inven
tions is the sunstill which is used on
life rafts or in tropical island areas
to distill water. Adopted by the
Army Air Forces it consists of a
tube into which the water to be
distilled is poured. The water is
absorbed by a black cloth. Sun ac
tion then vaporizes the water and
it condenses on the underside.
