Housing Center Calls For Rooms lor 10,000 Girls in War Work In an effort to find living quar ters lor nearly 10,000 civilian girls being recruited for Government and private war jobs here, the War Housing Center today appealed for additional single rooms in con veniently located sections of the city While several thousand rental rooms now' are listed with the War Housing Center as vacant, most of these are in outlying areas. » Many new Government employes, having given up comfortable homes to come here to aid the war effort, have been unwilling to remain in quarters located long distances from restaurants and places of their em ployment, it was said. Laundry Facilities Needed. In addition, the Center empha sized. it is important that the girls have use of laundry facilities, op portunity to receive an occasional visitor in a common room on the first floor and use of a bathroom which is not shared by too many other persons. Persons willing to rent rooms to help relieve the shortage are asked to list them with the War Housing Center by telephoning EX. 4160, Ext. 3001, or applying at 1400 Penn sylvania avenue N.W. Government agencies and private war industries have estimated that to meet the need for replacements and fill new jobs they will recruit a total of 9,400 civilian girls in the six months’ period ending July 1. While some of the 9,400 already have come here, the majority will be recruited during the next three months. Government Dormitories Filled. Until recently, the housing needs of incoming girl war workers could be largely filled through use of Gov ernment dormitories. Most of the dormitories are now’ filled to the extent that they will permit new residents to remain only five days while searching for per ' manent lodgings. This means, the housing center said, that most of the new girl employes will need to be housed on a “duration basis" in private homes and rooming and boarding establishments. Dr. Orville May Named To Agriculture Post Secretary of Agriculture Wickard today announced appointment of Dr. Orville E. May as chief of the Bureau of Agricultural and Indus trial Chemistry to succeed Dr. W. W. Skinner, who retires March 31 after 40 years’ service. Dr. May has served as co-ordi nator of chemical engineering re search programs in the Agricultural Research Administration. APPEAL FOR VACANT ROOMS—The heavy black line in the above map incloses the areas in which vacant rooms are needed to house civilian girls being recruited for work here with the Navy Department. The areas were selected by the Navy Department as those most easily reached from Navy offices by existing public transportation facilities. Rankin Says Dies Will Uncover Plot To Destroy Congress, By the Associated Press. Representative Rankin, Democrat, of Mississippi, said yesterday in a statement that he believed that if the Dies Committee continues its investigation of Walter Winchell’s broadcasts "it will uncover a gigantic conspiracy" to destroy Congress and set up “bureaucratic control.” Mr. Rankin referred to the action of the Dies Committee last week in issuing a subpoena for scripts and recordings of Mr. Winchell’s broad casts for the last two years. “Men have been schooled and trained in the technique of con trolling the Government from key positions in the various depart ments, bureaus and agencies,” Mr. Rankin stated. “Tire drive now seems to be to get rid of Congress by discrediting it and thereby deprive the American people of the only chance they have of expressing their will in the af fairs of the Nation. • * * This drive stretches back over a period of more than 20 years * * *. "This element is doing more to injure President Roosevelt and to discredit his administration than all other influences combined.” At Miami Beach, Fla., Mr. Win ched said he would leave today for Washington, where he would be “available for any subpoena or invi tation from the Dies Committee or any other congressional group." “I hope Mr. Dies sees fit to in vestigate me personally. I think it would be a public service. Any in vestigation of me would help bring out a lot of things the people ought to know about,” Mr. Winched added. Uruguay Buys Tinplate Without waiting for bids, the gov ernment of Uruguay purchased 500 tons of tinplate to meet a shortage of cans during the canning season this year. Fingerprint Files Here Studied in Lake Death By the Associated Press. CHICAGO, Mar. 20—Identifica tion of a battered, apparently tor tured body which was washed ashore from Lake Michigan at the Illinois-Indiana State line was sought today in Washington finger print files. The body was washed ashore Sat urday, and experts managed to ob tain fingerprints despite a police report that the fingertips apparent ly had been filed in an effort to prevent identification. Dr. Harry Brandman, deputy Lake County coroner, said hemor rhages under the victim’s finger nails might have been the result of torture before he was shot in the head, bound with wire and thrown into the lake. A post-mortem dis closed no water in the lungs. Police sr' ’ulated that the death may have been linked with the trunk murder of James De Angelo, whose body was found stuffed in an automobile trunk eight days ago. Policeman Walter Brasel of Ham mond, Ind.. said the lake victim’s brown hair had been dyed black and that a stain had been applied to darken his complexion. The man was clad in three shirts and three suits of underwear from which labels had been torn, and had on oversize shoes and trousers. I $ ' ■ It means a lot for a boy in the service to talk to his friends and family back home. Usually the best time he has to do that is in the evening. The Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company fi Support the Red Cross War Fund Steel Requirements Reported Increasing, Production Eases Ey the Associated Press. CLEVELAND. Mar. 20.—War re quirements in steel "are increasing rather than lessening,” the magazine Steel reported today. "Shipwork, landing craft, pontoons, landing mats, overseas containers and Signal Corps equipment are at the top of preference, with directives necessary for prompt delivery,” the publication said. “These products lean heavily on sheet mills, which are handicapped by the large portion of capacity en gaged on strip-plates. On heavy gauges and hot-rolled sheets some producers have nothing to offer be fore October. Cold-rolled sheets and lighter gauges of hot-rolled can be promised for August and Septem ber.” Support Prices Ended For Heavier Hogs By the Associated press. The War Pood Administration an nounced Saturday withdrawal of its support prices for hogs weighing from 270 to 330 pounds, effective April 15. After that date and until October 1, the price support program will apply only to hogs weighing from 200 to 270 pounds. The support price is $13.75 per 100 pounds, Chi cago basis.
