Still, a successful club finesse would allow South to get rid of a diamond, and, as can be observed, the finesse was “onside.” Nevertheless, South failed to make the slam, due to a rather simple but eminently successful swindle by East. West can be credited with an un witting assist for his opening of the deuce of diamonds. South imme diately saw the possibility of obviat ing the club finesse, when, on dummy's seven, East played the dia mond queen. South won with the ace, drew trumps, and then, deciding that the opening lead had marked West with the diamond ten, played a diamond from his hand. Of course, East then captured two diamond tricks and set the contract, whereas a simple club finesse would have given South his slam! * * * * Yesterday you were Oswald Ja coby's partner. Uncle Ray's Corner Far back in history men began to use figures of one kind or another as symbols or signs of their fam ilies. These were placed on the shields and banners of fighting men and on seals which were pressed into wax when letters were made ready for mailing. They also were used in other ways. When we look at shields which were carried by knights during the Middle Ages we find a great differ ence in the designs on them. Some have figures of stars or of the cres cent moon. Others have the outlines of flowers or crosses. Often there are only crosslines or circles on the shields. Quite a number have pic tures of lions, elephants or other animals. A certain kind of shield was passed down through the family, a son NATIONAL FLOWER FRANCE tie lily using the same design as his father. Thus "coats of arms’’ came into be ing. One old symbol is the "fleur-de lis.” Frenchmen gave it the name, which is pronounced “FLUR-dch LEE” or "FLUR-deh-LEESE.” The name fleur-de-lis means “flower of the lily.” Yet many say that the figure probably was taken from a white iris instead of from a lily. The fleur-de-lis became the royal symbol of France. King Louis VII used a "shield of lilies” on his royal seal in 1226. Almost half a century before that seal was made, a French prince wore several golden fleur-de lis on his blue suit and blue shoes at the time he was crowned King. Legend speaks of the fleur-de-lis back in the time of Clovis, the first Frankish King. As the story goes an angel handed a lily to Clovis at the time he was baptized a Chris tian! That story is only a legend, but we know that the fleur-de-lis, or some thing like it, was used as a sign thousands of years ago. In the first place it may have been an image of an Egyptian water lily. The water lily, or lotus, is shown in many pieces of writing from ancient Egypt. The Egyptians looked on the water lily as a symbol of religion. It was used as an offering to the gods and was a sign of the Nile River, "the giver of life.” If you want a free copy of the il lustrated leaflet. “Your Bodv at Work." send a self-addressed envelope bear ing a 3-cent stamp to Uncle Ray ia care of The Evening Star.
