THE WHITE HOUSE WASHINGTON March 39, 1944. Saar Mr. Vllsoni She statement regarding the progreaa of tha Bad Cross War Fund Campaign recently made by you and your asso ciates to ths psopls of tha nation's capital and nearby cparonltles has corns to ay notice. My views ae to the vital Importance of Bed Croes service* are set forth in my proclamation of February twen tieth to the people of this nation; also in my memorandum of January third to all Heads of Departments, Commissions and Agencies of the Federal and District Governments. Ton and your co-workers have my best withes for ths success of this Important undertaking In the Washington metropolitan area, which includes so many government workers, and I feel sure that the people will oversubscribe their goal when they consider the valiant sacrifice which la being made by their own relatives find friends In our fighting forces. Very sincerely yours, Lloyd B. Vlleon, Ksq., Chalraaa, Bed Cross Var Toad Campaign, VsaUagtoa, D. C. A LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT—Have you considered "the valiant sacrifice which is being made by relatives and friends in our fighting forces”? Today is the last day of the Red Cross drive. Red Cross (Continued From First Page t year, campaign officials said, but the number of those donations has fall en short by more than 100,000. Maj. Gen. George F. Lull, deputy surgeon general of the Army, and Miss Aline Kohler, Red Cross club director in Iceland and North Af rica, recently returned to the States, will be guest speakers at today’s meeting. Randolph G. Bishop, campaign director, announced a postcampaign meeting of all divisions for 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at the United States Chamber of Commerce for reports of late donations, adding that he believed it would be "a close race” to see what division goes over the top first. Yesterday’s reports from residen tial, city and nearby Maryland and Virginia area divisions brought an additional $151,469 to the campaign, representing 13,573 donations. In cluded in yesterday’s report was the $60,000 gift of Capt. and Mrs. Paul Mellon announced by C. Clifford Folger, chairman of the District Chapter of the Red Cross. Mellon Is Overseas. Capt. Mellon, the son of the late Andrew W. Mellon, who as Secre tary of the Treasury lived in the District for a number of years, is serving overseas with the Army. This gift was just half of their total contribution to the W'ar fund this year. Collections reported by the vari ous divisions yesterday and the totals raised and percentages to date are: Residential. $19,766 reported, $280,915 raised, 93.67 per cent; city, $10,173 reported, $21,742 raised, 90.76 per cent; Alexandria. $7,930 re ported, $43,169 raised, 94.19 per cent; Fairfax, $9,688 reported. $31,874 raised, 69.19 per cent; Arlington, $10,742 reported, $37,717 raised, 89.38 per cent; Montgomery, $5,042 re ported, $70,350 raised. 91.03 per cent; Prince Georges, $8^78 reported, $34,036 raised, 69.32 per cent, and booths, $4,307 raised, 16.77 per cent. The Kalorama area, which had a quota of $25,000, the largest goal for an area of its size, has reported 100 per cent subscription. Dr. Wassell, who was guest speak er at yesterday’s meeting and who will also be present for the premiere tomorrow, told campaign workers 'that the Red Cross to him meant 'life to my buddy and your boy.” He is a life member of the National Chinese Red Cross. He served on a Red Cross train in China in 1918 and 1919 and with the International Red Cross during the famine in North China in 1921. In Java in January, 1942, Dr. Wassell “buried 60 of my buddies and took over 47 wounded men” to bring back to the States. “If the present supply of blood plasma ’hich the Red Cross is putting out now was available then,” five of those 47 would not have died on the way back, he said. His ship, the U. S. S. Polk, was the first to leave a Pacific Coast port after war was declared. Miss Coletta Ryan, director of Red Cross clubs and rest arias in the South Pacific, said that 24 Red Cross installations, service clubs and rest areas were now in operation in the South Pacific.
