Payne of the Alcoholic Beverage Control Board, who toolc office August 4, has sug gested to the Commissioners that the annual salary of $5,000 for board members is too low and the subject has been referred to Budget Officer Walter L. Fowler for consideration. An informal memorandum was submitted by Chairman Payne on September 1, it was learned, and the Commissioners decided to refer the subject to Mr. Fowler on September 5, although no announcement was made of the action. Off. suggested that the salary of the ABC Board members be considered and added that the present rate “may obstruct acquisition In future of new members.” "The attraction is hardly too much to Interest good people,” the memo randum stated. Mr. Payne called attention to the fact that the salary was fixed when the Beverage Act was written in 1933 and that since that time salaries have generally increased, tax rates have risen and the cost of living has increased 34.7 per cent. It also was pointed out the “the $300 so-called overtime is not allowed them.” Reduced by Taxes. It was figured that the net result of Federal tax increase reduces the $5,000 to less than $3,600 in the case of a single person serving on the board. Mr. Fowler has not yet made his recommendation, it w;fs understood. He is said to be studying salaries of comparable positions elsewhere. Danes' Strike Goes On But Fighting Eases Br the Associated Press. STOCKHOLM, Sept. 20. —Street fighting and disorders which erupt ed in Denmark yesterday as Danes demonstrated against German seiz ure of government buildings and police stations were reported to have abated last night and latest advices from Copenhagen indicated calm once more prevailed in the city. The Free Danish Press Service said the Free Danish Council had asked all Danes to stop fighting, but to continue a general strike until tomorrow in protest against dissolu tion of the Danish police force of 12,000 men. Free Danes said some trains al ready had stopped last evening and predicted the strike would be uni versal except for gas, water and electric services. Earlier reports from Denmark said 3 Danish constabulary had fought a I fierce but unequal battle yesterday r In defense of the Royal Palace at r Amalienborg in Copenhagen, where aging King Christian X and his i family were were besieged. The Danish officers finally were subdued after killing at least 14 Nazis, these advices said. Some members of the constabulary were reported to have fled to Sweden.
