Settlement Sought
After Strike at 64
Plants Is Called Off

CLEVELAND, Oct. 12.—Concilia
tion procedings involving the Cleve
land Graphite Bronze Co. and the
Mechanics' Educational Society of
America were scheduled today after
officials of the unaffiliated union
abandoned plans for a sympathy
strike of 68,000 members in 64 Ohio
and Michigan war plants.
MESA National Secretary Mat
thew Smith had called the walkouts
for today in protest against what
he termed company refusal to dis
cuss settlement of a dispute involv
ing one worker. The concern’s dis
charge of an employe for allegedly
breaking a lock on a company lock
er, he said, precipitated a strike and
resulted in Army seizure of Graphite
Bronze properties September 5.
Mr. Smith called off the threat
ened strikes after a War Depart
men declaration that settlement of
the dispute must proceed according
to a regional War Labor Board plan.
The WLB specified conciliation as
the first step in settlement and di
rected that a three-man arbitra
tion panel handle the case if con
ciliation failed.
James L. Myers, Graphite Bronze
executive vice president, said the
company was ready to comply with
the WLB conciliation order "at the
proper point in the grievance pro
cedure.” Mr. Myers maintained the
union had broken off grievance pro
cedure.
Chrysler Delays Opening
Of Dodge Truck Division
DETROIT, Oct. 12 Chrysler
Dorp, announced today that its
Dodge truck division which it closed
ruesday in a dispute over overtime
for repairmen would not be re
>pened at present because “other
;mployes of Local 140, United Auto
nobile Workers (CIO), have indi
cted they will not maintain high
standards of quality and produc
;ion.”
When the plant was closed, making
2,400 production workers idle, a
Dhrysler statement said 4t was due
o the refusal of 130 repairmen to
work overtime to. help smooth out a
new track production Job.
Today’s statement said the repair
men have agreed to work overtime,
but added:
“In the last two weeks there have
been many evidences of slowdowns
and continued disregard for the
maintenance of quality In the work.”
Officials of Local 140 said the shut
ting down of the plant constituted
“a lockout." they said the repair
men “have agreed to work overtime,
and the production employes are
ready to work, but the management
will not permit them.”
Super Explosive Invented
To Blast 'Dragons' Teeth'
By the Associated Press.
BOSTON, C-et. 12.—Known only
by the cryptic symbol “RDX,” a
super explosive has been built by
Army ordnance for engineers to
blast a way through miles of con
crete antitank defenses on the ap
proaches to Aachen.
<Jol. H. B. Sheets, commander of
the Boston Ordnance District, ex
plained that these obstacles, “known
as 'dragons’ teeth’ wad looking like
Martian molars,” had to be leveled
to permit passage of tanks and
other combat vehicles.
