Mother—Johnnie was bom cross and bad-tempered, I believe. Even as a baby he seldom smiled and he's so ugly with his little playmates. Spanking him doesn’t do any good. Uncle Ray's Corner There is a tree which has flowers very much like wild roses. I am thinking of the apple tree. Actually this tree is classed as a member of the rose family, along with pear, plum and peach trees. Few sights of springtime are more beautiful than an apple tree in full blossom. The white and pink blos soms have a pleasant odor. Bees, as well as people, have learned about the odor of apple blossoms. They visit the flowers and spread the pollen from one to another. For thousands of years, bees have been spreading pollen from blossom to blossom among apple trees. Without this work apple trees would have died, or never would have come into being. Pollen must be spread if fertile seeds are to be produced. New trees will grow from the seeds, but the fruit crop of the new trees is likely to be poor. For this reason the custom of "grafting” has spread. Apple trees of any kind may be planted but, while they are young, nurserymen graft on them buds taken from trees which are producing good apples. When the trees grow up. they produce the same kind of apples as the trees from which the buds were taken. Sometimes several kinds of buds are grafted on a single tree. In this way, it becomes possible for one tree to produce several kinds of apples! There are more than 7,500 kinds of apple trees. About 50 kinds are important in the markets of the world. Apples grow on every inhabited continent, but North American leads all continents in the yearly crop. ATOMS. RADIUM AND ATOM POWER is the litle of an illustrated leaflet. North would then, no doubt, have opened a diamond and the hand would play itself. On the bidding as it actually took place North elected to open the three of spades. With greed in his heart and no regard for safety, de clarer ducked in dummy, on the theory that North must be leading from something. He looked forward to taking a flock of spade tricks. South won with the king and it re quired no stroke of genius to see that the spade suit held forth no future for the defense. South there ; upon shifted to the 10 of hearts, | and since declarer could transact no business while the ace of clubs was lout against him, the contract went on the rocks for two tricks. It is declarer's first duty to insure the contract and to worry about overtricks later. By taking the ace of spades and driving out the ace of clubs immediately nine tricks can be counted. The danger of a shift to hearts should have been appar ent. There might have been some ex cuse, however doubtful, for West, had he been playing in a match point duplicate, in which overtricks are very vital, but in a rubber ; bridge game this was a sin of tha • first order. Voice, high baritone of pleasing timbre and expressiveness. The Stassenian voice is youthful and resonant—the type of voice that the microphone opens its arms to. and says “Welcome, brother. We re going to get along fine together.'' A good radio voice may not decide an election, but it has never yet hindered a political career. Enunciation, unusually good. His speech is “on the lips.” This flexi bility of articulation not only carries well, it also imparts accuracy and decisiveness to his delivery. Style, standard American. That is to say, it approaches the accentless manner of speaking which radio designates as “neutral speech,” i.e., speech in which there are no traces of provincial or sectional dialect. But this does not imply a lack of personality. Mr. Stassen speaks forcefully and with polish. But it is a polish that is not "cultivated.” His style is natural, masculine and thoroughly American. Pronunciation, very good. He has achieved a nice balance between the home-spun bucolicisms of the aver age Washington solgn and the ex quisite elocutions affected by some broadcasters. On the broadcast checked for this article. Mr. Stassen shattered radio tradition by correctly sounding the “rn” in "government.” Also, he did not sav ' progrum " for “program.M There was but one unimportant mis locution: “in-di-vi-jull" for “in dividual.''
