Vincent Youmans, Composer Of Many Popular Songs, Dies Tea tor Two Topped Long List of Hits In Musical Shows By th* Associated Press DENVER, April 5.—Vincent You mans, 47, composer of such popular song hits as “Great Day” and the immortal “Tea for Two,” died here early today after an illness of several weeks. Mr. Youmans died of tuberculosis. He had been confined in a local sanitarium for more than a month. The famed songwriter, who wrote musical scores for a dozen or more hit Broadway productions, was born in New York. He first hit the big time in the music world in 1920, when he turned out the score for the musical comedy hit “Two Little Girls in Blue.” Mr. Youmans gained lasting fame along Tin Pan Alley when he wrote the score for the smash hit “No, No, Nanette.” From it emerged two mod ern-day popular classics—“Tea for Two,” and “I Want to Be Happy.” His other compositions include “I Know That You Know,” “Some times I’m Happy," "Without a Song,” “More Than You Know,” “Time on My Hands,” “Drums in My Heart,” and Mr. Youmans’ own favorite, the beautiful ballad “Through the Years.” He also wrote music for the motion picture “Flying Down to Rio,” which first paired Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire as a dance team. Mr. Youmans married Anne Var ley, a dancer in one of his produc tions, in 1927. The marriage ended South Korea May Get Its Autonomy Soon By th» Associated Press SEOUL. April 5.—The American Military Government soon may give American-occupied Southern Korea its own government because of fail ure of the American-Soviet Com mission quickly to establish self rule for all this country. A top-ranking American officer told the Associated Press today that a move is under way to turn over affairs in the American zone (south of the 38th parallel) to Korean officials, with the AMG serving in an advisory capacity. The officer said factors behind the self-rule plan include, besides the slowness of the point confer ence, the steady loss of American military administrative personnel due to demobilization. Reports of disagreements be tween Russians representing the oc cupation forces for Northern Korea and the Americans representing the south have seeped out of closed sessions of the conference. There has been nothing to indicate more than scant progress in two weeks. Dr. Syugman Rhee, who recently withdrew as active head of the American-supported Democratic Council in the American zone, has recovered from an illness and is reported planning a two weeks' speaking tour of all eight provinces in Southern Korea. This support ed predictions that if a form of interim self-government is estab lished in the American zone Dr. Rhee will head it. Department to Sponsor Health Broadcast The District Health Department will sponsor a 15-mlnute broadcast over Station WOL at 5:30 pm. to morrow in connection with National Negro Health Week, which ends Sunday.
