Hoover Sees Harvest As Key to Survival Of Europe's Starving •y th« As»ociat»d Pr#*» LONDON, April 6.—Herbert Hoo ver said today that if the underfed peoples of Europe could survive until the autumn harvest there would be a general improvement in the world food situation. The former President, head of President Truman's touring food commission, said that by present Indications the wheat crop appeared “extremely good” in the Northern Hemisphere. Mr. Hoover said the appeal of Pope Pius XII Thursday to Brazil and Argentina to produce more wheat would "influence contribu tions everywhere and increase sup plies to cover the great gap in the food situation.” He added that while he was in Rome he found the pontiff “deeply moved by the plight of peoples throughout the world.” To Visit Brussels. Mr. Hoover planned to leave Lon don today for Brussels. The tour will take the commission to the Netherlands, Denmark. Au stria, Yugoslavia, Greece and India. The food ministers of 17 Euro pean countries yesterday recom mended united action to ’conserve dwindling wheat supplies. The food ministers, attending an . emergency food conference, agreed to ask their governments to adopt Immediate ‘special measures” to combat black markets, to ration feeding of grain to livestock and press farmers for further deliveries of food stocks. i onsumpuon cut l rged. They called on their own people for all possible reductions in food consumption and urged food ex porting countries to contribute addi tional amounts of fertilizer, farm machinery, seeds and consumer goods, such as clothing, shoes and tobacco to stimulate food production by continental farmers. The ministers adopted a resolution recommending a standard extraction rate ^ milling wheat at not less than 85 per cent and pledged efforts to increase the rate to 90 per cent. The measure would make present European bread still darker. Italian Woman Who Killed Briton Gets Minimum Term By the Associated Press HOME. April 6.—An Italian court last night sentenced Miss Lydia Cirillo, 34. to four years and one month imprisonment for the pistol slaying of British Army Capt. Sid ney E. Lasch, who allegedly de serted her for a younger woman. Spectators in the tightly packed courtroom cheered when Miss Cirillo, described by her attorney as “an innocent victim of love” who killed “in defense of the honor of Italian women,” drew the minimum sentence immediately after convic tion on a manslaughter charge. The maximum sentence could have been life imprisonment. The court ruled that when she com pletes her prison term, the brunette must be committed to a mental institution for three and one-half years. The defendant admitted she shot Capt. Lasch to death when she learned he was married and had deserted her for a younger Italian woman. The court audience followed every emotion of the comely defendant, cheering widely when her attorney appeared to have scored a point in her favor and sobbing loudly when Lydia herself broke into tears.
