Name ___ Address_____ Letters Our Readers Talk Back "NO OTHER MAN” No doubt it is convenient for story-telling purposes to have the cities in your fiction serial, “No Other Man,” by Alfred Noyes, remain intact. But as a matter of fact most cities and towns the world over would go up in smoke almost as thoroughly as though the death ray had been an atomic bomb. There would be three main causes: (1) Automobiles out of control would crash into buildings and in many cases burn. (2) Ciga rettes would be dropped every Evelyn: Noyes' heroine where and the results would go unchecked. (3) Electric irons left on goods or falling to the floor would dot a city with burning houses, apartments, laundries and tailor shops. William Penn Newby Detroit, Mich. ... Mark Adams arrives ashore 24 hours after the catastrophe. Then he dashes madly about, switching on electric lights. Electric utility power plants can not operate for any extended period of time without supervi sion. .. Gremlins must have been operating those plants. Marion L. De Witt West Englewood, N. J. .. . Why don’t these authors con sult an engineer? The story is full of technical impossibilities. And this at a time when almost half the adult population has had some engineering training. Frederick G. Hehr Santa Monica, Calif. ... "No Other Man’’ is, to my mind, one of the greatest stories ever written — at least in modem times. The story is timely and should be widely read. Congratula tions. Benjamin Collins Woodbury Boston, Mass. STATE SYMPHONY We are wondering why the article on the North Carolina Symphony Orchestra was headed ‘‘Mountain Music." Is it the idea that North Caro linians are all mountaineers and therefore their state symphony or chestra would play nothing but hillbilly music? You will note from our program that only selections from Bach, Prokofieff, Liszt, Tschaikowsky and Strauss are included. We hope that sometime you can come down and hear some of the orchestra's hillbilly tunes. Christopher Crittenden Raleigh, N. C. MARX FAN I liked Groucho Marx’s contribu tion, “How To Be a Spy." He not only tickles my funny bone, he gives it a compound fracture. He twists our language so that even its own father wouldn’t recog nize it. He takes this mad world of ours and puts a maraschino cherry of mirth on top of it, and it seems strangely palatable under his curi ous culinary touch of comedy. Funny-bone tickler Somehow everything else seems sane after he has stuck his crazy spatula of wit in the brew. O. Orbaan New York, N. Y. Letters should be addressed to the Letters Editor, THIS WEEK Magazine, 4Z0 Lexington Asenue, N. Y. 17, N. Y. They cannot be acknowledged or returned, but we wilt print Ike shortest and best. “A.
