For Mothers Urged i Washington hospitals should hold nutrition and child psychology classes for yoyng mothers during the last five days of their stay in the maternity ward, Dr. Howard A. Rusk, formerly in charge of the Army Air Forces convalescent serv ices, has suggested. Addressing the annual luncheon of the Instructive Visiting Nurse So ciety yesterday at the Roger Smith Hotel, Dr. Rusk said the mothers’ time in the hospital could be used more profitable. Now a writer on the staff of the New York Times, Dr. Rusk said, courses in infant feed ing, buying for children and first aid could be a “challenge’’ to the mother and a help to Washington homes. The luncheon marked the 25th year of service with the society of Miss Gertrude H. Bowling, executive director. Miss Bowling was presented with a silver bowl and was praised highly by Miss Elsa M. Peterson, president. Dr. Rusk said he had seen suchj excellent results in vocational train- j ing given convalescent veterans that he wished the 23,000,000 handicap ped Americans in the United States could all have some rehabilitative service. Earning capacity and self respect can be tremendously raised by a few courses in a new skill, he said. The doctor said industrial com panies could save themselves many pensions if they had a vocational guidance service to teach other oc cupations to men who became dis abled in their employ.
