A national illustrated magazine recently presenter! an article about perfected standards for the working hours and living condi tions of domestic employees. 1 have said many times that those who have chronic “servant trouble" have their own bad man ners to blame. As a matter of fact, no test of a lady is more accurate than the courtesy she shows at home. One who is inconsiderate or overliearing has forgotten that in the "code of a lady” no obligation is greater than thoughtful con sideration for the well-being of those who are sheltered beneath her roof. We all know that ill these past war years homeowner*, no less than hotel and restau rant proprietors, have had a very unhappy time of it. In all branches of domestic skill thou sands of women, inspired by patriotism, the appeal of greater freedom and the much fat ter pay en velopes, went towork inwarplants. Getting Time Off Now, of course, the patriotic motive is past. Free time — to the extent of having it turned on with the blowing of a whistle — was a greater certainty than time off for an employee working in a house hold. However, out of every pay envelope must be deducted rent, food, light, heat, sundry household supplies and possibly daily trans portation — all of which leaves a balance of just about nothing! In contrast, the domestic employee, paying for not one of these "neces sities,” has her whole pay check to spend —or to save—as she chooses. A very real disadvantage to the domestic employee is the inex plicable opprobrium cast upon the word “servant”—an attitude that is definitely undemocratic. When applied to a person of intelligence, education and refinement, its im plication of the lack of these quali fications is certainly unfair. It is shockingly discourteous to one who is no longer young to have to be called by her first name by everyone, including the butcher boy. Uses Last Name At the present time when the whole world is using first names (not even our president is held above this familiarity), this might go into reverse. There is an actual example in New England, where a young inheritor of an old place is called "Johnny” by his elderly cook and handy man. whom he in turn addresses as “Mrs. Brown” and “Mr. Brown.” The remaining disadvantage, too often encountered, is the indefioite amount of work. In every well-run house a schedule not only must be made, but also adhered to. One pair of hands can do only so much and there are so many hours to do it in. All too often the employer who means well and who even “thinks the world of” Nora will impose on her. This is what 1 mean: Mrs. Employer will exclaim, “Oh, Nora, would you mind ter ribly staying with the children tonight? Mrs. Jones wants us to come over.” A long time ahead she could have asked: “Nora, would you mind taking Wednesday or any other day the week of the twenty-third?” But the attitude of counting on Nora’s generosity shows a lack of consideration which thoughtless employers exhibit more often than they realize.
