Utility Shares Offer
Good Yields on D. C.
Stock Exchange

Many especially good yields are
now prevailing among the public
utility and miscellaneous issues list
ed on the Washington Stock Ex
change, a survey reveals. Potomac
Electric Power 6 per cent preferred
tops the utility list with an interest
return of 5.30 per cent, followed by
Capital Transit which now pays the
Investor 5.20 per cent.
Potomac Power 5H per cent pre
ferred returns 5 per cent, Washing
ton Gas common, 4.24; Gas $4.50
preferred, 4.02, and Railway & Elec
tric preferred, 3.98. Gas preferred
pays the holder 3.89 per cent. In
the first quarter trading, Capital
Transit was the most active of these
stocks, with Gas common standing
second.
In the miscellaneous group Lans
ton Monotype yields 5.04 per centf
National Mortgage, 5.32; Woodward
& Lotlirop preferred, 5.50; Terminal
Refrigerating & Warehousing, 5;
GarQnckel preferred, 4.91, and
Hecht common, 3.97. Mergenthaler
Linotype returns 3.08 and Carpel
Corp., 3 per cent.

Hecht common sold at 40 on the
Washington Stock Exchange today,
a new 1946 high. Mergenthaler
Linotype at 77 and Capital Transit
at 39 also were at new peaks for the
year.
J. M. Cox, sales manager of the
National Biscuit Co., announced to
day that all employes in Washing
ton will share in a comprehensive
pension plan which will go into ef
fect May 1.
The company will stand the entire
expense, employes will be given full
credit for all years of continuous
service with the company and pen
sions will be based on the last 10
years of service prior to retirement.
The plan makes retirement com
pulsory at 63, Mr. Cox said, who
added that the plan will be avail
able to 28,000 employes.

Raymond M. Foley, Federal Hous
ing Commissioner, will address the
annual meeting of the National As
so(£ation of Mutual Savings Banks
in 5-.New York May 16-18. Other
wifely known speakers are on the
program. Reservations are larger
thto in any year since the associa
tions was formed.
Representative Harold C. Hagen
of Minnesota, and U. V. Wilcox of
Washington, editor and radio com
mutator, will be among the speak
er# at the Chicago meeting of the
Industrial Bankers’ Association,
May 9-10. Automobile loans will be
given a big place on the program.

District Theaters common stock
is now being quoted over the coun
ter at 11 Vi bid and 12 Vs offered. The
stock has just been sold publicly.
The company operates a chain of
movie houses in Washington and
Virginia.
Chester R. Jones, on terminal
leave as an Air Forces captain, has
been appointed general agent for
the Washington area of the State
Mutual Life Insurance Co. of Wor
cester, Mass. He has been in the
business since he graduated from
the University of Minnesota in 1932.
Leon Katz, acting agent for several
years, will continue as associate
general agent.

Steel Mill Operations for the cur
rest week were scheduled at 77.4%
of (capacity, indicating production of
1,364,100 tons—American Iron &
Steele Institute. Figures last week
were 78.3% and 1,379,900 tons; a
month ago, 88.9% and 1,566.800; a
year ago, 91.9% and 1,683,300.
Building Activity below the Ma
son-Dixon Line has increased to
$379,910,000 in the first 1946 quarter
vs. $318,689,000 a year ago—Manu
facturers Record. March volume
reached $148,911,000, highest amount
since June, 1943.
All-Year Saturday Closing of the
New York Stock Exchange was op
posed by governors of the Associa
tion of Stock Exchange Firms in a
resolution at a St. Louis meeting.
The exchange has decided to close
Sapardays from June through Sep
tember.
United Biscuit Co. declared an
extra dividend of 25 cents and the
regular quarterly of 25 cents a com
mon share, both payable June 1. A
similar extra declared in December
was the first in several years.
Otis & Co. asked the Ohio Securi
ties Division for permission to sell
500,000 common shares of Steep
Rock Iron Mines. Ltd., owner of one
of the largest iron ore deposits in
the world. It is building a mine
under a lake in Northern Ontario.
Erie Railroad accepted a bid of
1.50%, submitted by Chase National
Bank, for $1,890,000 of promissory
notes to help finance purchase of 700
all-steel boxcars.
American Molasses Co. — 105,000
common shares, for the account of
certain stockholders, were marketed
by a group headed by Homblower &
Weeks and Union Securities Corp.
at 15%.
Tennessee Gas & Transmission
Co. called for redemption on May 13
its 5% cumulative preferred stock
at 108 plus accrued dividends of
$1.41% a share.
American Telephone & Telegraph
Cornet income for the March quar
ter was $46,076,000 or $2.28 a share
vs. $40,392,952 or $2.07 in the same
1945 period. Consolidated net of the
BelJ System for the quarter ended
February 28 was $50,225,611 or $2.49
vs.J $46,825,563 or $2.41. System
companies have added about 1,000,

NEW YORK, April 15. —Steels,
motors, rubbers and selected Indus
trials led a general retreat of frac
tions to more than a point in today’s
stock market.
Continuing the trend which got
underway in Saturday’s short ses
sion, losses near the close had
spread to a good number of the
metals, utilities, rails, aircrafts and
chemicals.
Dealings wjre at a slow pace most
of the time, approximating 1,200,000
shares, or about the same volume
as registered last •’riday.
Pessimism over the soft coal
strike, now going into its third week,
accounted for part of the selling.
Customers realized that if the shut
down was not ended soon it would
affect progress in o ther basic in
dustries—some of which already
have been closed once because of
labor strife.
Patrons also withheld commit
ments pending quarterly income
reports from some big companies
as a barometer of industrial ac
tivity.
Declining were Bethlehem,
Youngstown Sheet, General Motors,
Chrysler, Goodrich, Montgomery
Ward, American Airlines, Western
Union "A”, American Water Works,
American Smelting, Anaconda,
General Electric, Du Pont, Allied
Chemical, Eastman Kodak, Owens
Illinois, United States Gypsum,
Southern Railway, Paramount and
National Distillers.

CHICAOO, April 15 WV—Varying de
mand kept the price of May rye well
ahead moat of the time today, bu! oats
generally were neglected after Initial
transactions.
A report from Washington around noon
that the Pace higher parity bill appeared
to hare a good chance of passage by
Congreis whipped up a renewed flurry
of May rye buying and quotations at one
time were 4‘a cents a bushel above Sat
urday's close.
Demand had been fairly strong for the
grain all day In view of the continued
tick! cash altuation and an unconfirmed
report that shipments were moving to the
■astern seaboard, probably for export.
Cash prices for rye last week were un
derstood to be as much as 30 cents or
more a bushel over the May futures price.
After some scattered oats buying at the
start on a higher cotton trend and the
posalblllty that UNRRA would buy oats
as a substitute for wheat In the export
program, the price for all deliveries
eased off with demand and held barely
steady most of the time thereafter.
Wheat, eern and barley finished again
at ceilings of 1.83*4 1.21*4 and 1.761?.
respectively. Oats were '« cent higher
to ’< cent, lower than Saturday's close.

NEW YORK. April 15 1.47.—The cotton
market registered fair site gains In erratic
trading today dominated by price control
developments. Prices rallied more than S2
a bale in early dealings on mill and outside
buying partly Influenced by the growing op
position of cotton States Congressmen to
the Bowles program to curb further cotton
prices advance. After receding moderately
on hedging the market again turned up
ward on a flurry of buying stimulated by
a statement of Representative Pace. Dem
ocrat. of Georgia, that the chances for
putting through his parity raising measu^
was good.
Late afternoon prices were sn cents to
81.75 a bale higher. May. 27.59; July,

25% Flour Reduction

Tells Senate Group

was no alternative to the pro
posed 25 per cent flour reduction
order for the Nation’s bakeries
and retailers, if this country is
to meet its wheat commitments
to foreign nations.
At the same time, the Secretary
admitted that he personally had
failed to note compliance by restau
rants and dining cars with food
conservation measures urged last
month by the President’s Famine
Emergency Committee, despite
agreement by the industry to co
operate.
"I have reached the conclusion
we must tell the restaurants that
they must get along with 25 per
cent less flour," Mr. Anderson de
clared. The Senate committee called
Mr. Anderson as its first witness
after reporting a flood of complaints
from small bakers that the proposed
order would force them out of busi
ness.
“Theoretically, the order should
be issued at once,'1 the Secretary as
serted in replying to a suggestion of
Senator Wherry, Republican, of
Nebraska that the order be held up
three weeks to allow time for the
Government’s wheat procurement
program at grain elevators to have
effect.

Waiting, Mr. Anderson said,
would only mean that much wheat
would disappear In the meantime.
“I sum up the wheat situation like
this: To meet our export commit
ments between now and the end of
June, we’ve got to squeeze around
49,000,000 bushels out of our con
sumption and our stocks,” he de
clared.
Mr. Anderson gave committee
members copies of the latest Agri
culture Department wheat situa
tion report, which warnet that by
July 1, wheat stocks in the four
exporting countries—United States.
Canada, Australia and Argentina—
may be down to about 400,000,000
bushels, the smallest since 1938.
He pointed out that total re
quirements for bread grains by other
nations for the first half of this
year were 784,000,000 bushels, as
against a total available world sup
ply of wheat of between 375,000,000
and 435,000,000 bushels.
"We are getting closer to the bot
tom of the barrel," Mr. Anderson
warned the committee.
Working on Corn Program.
He said that bakers would not
make as much money this year as
they could with unrestricted sup
plies of wheat, but that “the same
is true of distillers, and brewers, and
feed manufacturers and others.”
An Agriculture Department
spokesman disclosed earlier that the
agency was working on a cprn
purchase program through use of
certificates to farmers. It is similar
to the wheat purchase program, un
der which holders of wheat who
will sell will be issued certificates
of sale to the Government return
able at any time up to mid-1947.
The department, in a report yes
terday on the 1945-6 world corn
crop, estimated total world supplies
at 5,050,000,000 bushels, the smallest
since 1941. This is 4 per cent below
the 1944-5 crop. Declines from a
year ago were noted by the depart
ment for North America and Eu
rope, while South America’s crop,
now being harvested, is 30 per cent
above 1945 s poor yield.
Meanwhile. UNRRa Director La
Guardia said he had urged a 25
per cent set-aside of American
grain at flour mills for foreign re
lief, and not 35 per cent as UNRRA
stated Saturday. He explained that
the higher figure was a clerical er
ror in the Washington office.
Wrong Figure Sent Out.
‘ The message (to British officials!
should have said 25 per cent and
not 35 per cent,” Mr. La Guardia
said, "but maybe the typist had a
better understanding than I had. It
was a slip of the tongue and not a
mistake of the heart. If the order
for 25 per cent isn't made effective
soon, it will have to be 35 per cent
before very long.”
While the bakery industry is
strongly opposed to the order, ihe
milling industry appeared ready to
co-operate.
C. D. McKenzie, president of the
Millers National Federation, tele
graphed Government officials that it
would co-operate fully hi any work
able program "that would get flour i
and wheat to starving millions of
Europe and Asia, while providing
adequate supplies for America."
The message was sent to Mr. An
derson, Chester C. Davis, executive
director of the Famine Emergency
Committee, and Eugene Meyer, vice
chairman of the committee.
0. S. Aide in India Warns
Of Optimism Over Crops

he had reported nothing concerning
food conditions in India “that would
reflect such optimism as is apparent’*
in recent statements of President
Truman and Secretary of Agricul
ture Anderson.

food prospects, citing among
other factors recent rains in
India.)
Mr. Merrell’s comment was in re
sponse to a question poaed as fear
regarding food difficulties in India
led to upsurges of buying through
out the country, causing the prices
of peas, beans and lentils to soar.

up a signal from Algiers, 4,000 mile*
away.
“Is Philadelphia anywhere neaf
Collingswood, N. J.?” the Algierg
operator asked after an exchange at
call signs.
Assured that it was, the Algiers
radioman, Lt. James Miller of Rock
ford, HI., said his girl friend lived
there and asked, “Will you get in
tov.ch with her for me?”
Operator Barber did even better.
He again contacted Lt. Miller in
Algiers. This time he had Miss
Alene Brinkman, the lieutenant’s
girl friend, at his station and more
than an hour of broadcasting
followed.
