McFarland Clemency
Petitions Scheduled
To Be Filed Tomorrow
Petitions asking .executive clem
ency for Earl J. McFarland, 25,
convicted slayer of Dorothy Berrum,
probably will be filed with the Justice
Department tomorrow, attorneys
for the former Marine said today.
P. Bateman Ennis, who defended
McFarland when a District Court
jury found him guilty of murdering
I the 18-year-old girl in Potomac
Park nearly two years ago, said
the move will follow conferences
with Willard Albert, Knoxville at
torney, who also represents McFar
land.
Meanwhile, Mr. Albert, who came
to McFarland's support after Fed
eral Bureau of Investigation agents
| recaptured the escaped slayer there,
] is enroute to Washington today. Mr.
Albert brings a plea for executive
clemency, signed by 3,000 Knox
iville residents, asking commutation
of McFarland's death sentence. The
25-year-old New Market, Tenn.,
prisoner is scheduled to die June 14
in the electric chair at District
Jail, from which he escaped with
Joseph D. Medley April 3.
The petitions which Mr. Albert
carries state the signers are “not
convinced” of McFarland's guilt
and that such “guilt came about
through circumstantial, sensational
news reporting and his past rec
ord.” They assert McFarland is
"mentally incompetent.”
The FBI meantime had no com
ment on reports that McFarland's
capture in Knoxville came about
through a tip provided by a boyhood
friend of the convicted slayer.
Mr. Ennis charged today that
Marine Corps records indicating the
convicted slayer was a “very poor
Marine” were withheld by the
Marine Corps when the defense
subpoenaed McFarland's service rec
ord during his trial. The attorney
said he could have used McFarland's
bad service record to prove an un
stable state of mind at the trial.

president of Pennsylvania-Central
Airlines at the annual directors’
meeting yesterday in the airlines
general offices at National Airport.
It was the 13th successive year he
had been named to head the organ
ization.
Other officers re-elected were
James H. Carmichael, executive vice
president; J. J. O'Donovan, Luther
Harris and Robert J. Wilson, vice
presidents; R G. Lochiel, vice presi
dent and treasurer; Hayes Dever.
secretary, and Richard E. Fell and
Robert M. Averill, regional vice
presidents.
Mr. Monro reported to directors
that the airline has increased its
passenger seating 80 per cent since
January, and that the January figure
will be tripled by summer.

Sailor's Curiosity
Causes Fire Alarm
At Navy Building
A sailor's curiosity today
caused a short-lived fire scare
at Building T-4 of the Navy
Department. Seventeenth street
and Constitution avenue.
"I wanted to see how it
works,” the sailor, on duty in a
fileroom at Building T-4. said.
He thereupon opened the fire
alarm box in the room and
pulled the hook. Approximately
20 pieces of District fire ap
paratus responded.
After failing to find the fire,
the firemen learned the sailor
had admitted his action.
