Bible Class Leaders J. A. Patterson, Jr., Has Taught The Scriptures Since a Youth A real "sparkplug” in Sunday school work at. Calvary Baptist Church is John A. Patterson, jr„ know'n as "Young John” to distin guisn mm from his equally ac tive father, John A. Patterson. “Young John’’ grew naturally into leadership in this work. A member of Cal vary since child hood, he early became inter ested in young peoples’ work. This interest was broadened to interdenomi national work J. A. Patterson, Jr. alter ne was sent to an older boys’ YMCA conference at Frederick, Md., in 1922. Ideas, which he puts into prac tice, come easily to Mr. Patterson. As superintendent of the young peo ples’ department, a position he has held since 1940, “Young John” is presently experimenting with hold ing classes from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m. and then convening a general as sembly for the next half hour. The assembly is addressed by an out standing speaker, who discusses such subjects as comparative reli gions, missions, denominational his tories and doctrines. The young people's department, consisting of seven clashes, including a recently formed ex-servicemen's group, is organized on an executive committee basis, with the president and secretary of each class members i with department officers and class teachers. Before taking over this superintendency, Mr. Patterson was head of the senior department from 1930 to 1940. "Young John” and his father have done many things together in church work. They both served on the Board of Deacons at Calvary and are members of the Vaughn Bible Class. Patterson, sr., has been regis trar with Ed Tolson of the Organ ized Bible Class Association since 1925 and "Young John” has been their assistant since 1926. He has also been a member of the District Sunday School Association since 1923 and treasurer since 1941. A native of Washington, Patter son, jr„ is a graduate of McKinley Technical High School and of Na tional University. He is now man ager of the teletypwriter service, commercial department, of the local telephone company, with which con cern he has been associated since 1923. He is also a member of the Board of Trade.
