House Amish Silent on Plea That They Use factors By the A;»ocioted Presi LANCASTER, Pa.. April 29.—'The, 13 bishops who govern the House Amish still had made no reply today; to pleas that the sect abandon their' refusal to use tractors to pull farm equipment and thus increase the production of food to relieve the world shortage. ^ The appeal was made by Clyde A. Zehner, Pennsylvania agricultural adjustment administrator, who said: yesterday that thousands of Euro peans may starve this summer be cause of the "religious beliefs" of the House Amish. Mr. Zehner insisted he had “no quarrel with people's religious be liefs," but maintained the House Amish failure to use tractors is “very inconsistent," since they have made numerous changes in centuries-old customs. Mr. Zehner pointed out the sect has substituted mowers for scythes, grain binders for cradles and thresh ingjnachines for flails—but said that tractors most of them own are used “for nearly everything except plow ing and harrowing.’’ The House Amish differ from the Church Amish in that the latter worship in churches and use trac tors for pulling equipment.
