Gen. Tu Yu-ming, government commander in chief in Manchuria, told ,a press conference his forces had turned back the Communist drive and captured Penki (Penh, sihu), main Communist stronghold 40 miles southeast of Mukden. Gen Tu declared the Communists mobilized large forces around strong government positions in Southern Manchuria and began an “offensive” Sunday which rolled northward for three days for an undisclosed dis tance. On May 1, he added, the govern ment launched a counter drive and captured Penki after a savage two day battle. He asserted 3,000 Com munists were taken prisoner there. Further details of the conflict were lacking. At Nanking, Gen. George C. Mar shall conferred for an hour and a half with Gen. Chou En-lai, chief Communist negotiator, in a resump tion of conversations concerning a truce in Manchuria. Gen. Chou proposed that three man truce teams be sent into hither to dormant Central China, where the civil warfare had spread from Man churia. He later told a press conference he considered the Central China fighting more dangerous for the fu ture of the country than that in Manchuria. Communists in Peiping alleged the government had as sembled 11 armies of more than 300,000 men for a great battle on the central plain of the Hupeh and Honan province border area. Gen. Chou said the Russian gove ernment had withdrawn railroad and diplomatic representatives from Manchuria because it recognized that any attempt to operate the Changchun railroad, main north south artery, would be futile as long as fighting was in progress. USO to Continue Work Here Until 1948, Chairman Says The USO will continue to operate in the District until December 31, 1947, Miss Clara Boyd Wheeler, chairman of the Washington USO Staff Conference, announced yes terday in emphasizing that the role played by USO volunteers continues to grow since they serve not only experienced servicemen but also young inductees. This is because the armed forces are now in the process of building new peacetime strength and at the same time disbursing wartime might, thereby presenting “a real challenge" for a broader recrea tional program in USO clubs, ac cording to Miss Wheeler. She] added that everything must be done to maintain the morale of the n®w' inductee who is more likely to feel “a little useless and homesick" j since he is not being geared to “wartime pitch.” In Washington’s 12 USO clubs.; which are continually thronged with! servicemen, Miss Wheeler pointed! out that volunteer hostesses act as chaperons, dance and badminton! partners, and also service the snack bars for men.
