Pass 1* Pass 1A Pass 2 A Pass 4 A Pass Pass Pass Opening lead: King of hearts. In attempting to guess the loca tion of missing honors or the dis tribution of a specific suit, it is our policy to resort to- percentages or probabilities only when no other evi dence is available. Any clue picked up at the table should be assigned more weight than an abstract math ematical proposition. Today's hand illustrates what we have in mind. The bidding was quite regular. West held what some players regard as an optional opening, but prop erly chose to pass because of the probable difficulties that might te encountered in finding a rebid. North elected to open with one club because his hand was not quite up to the standard of a no-trump bid, and a spade opening might present a rebidding problem on the next round. The bidding thereafter was routine. West’s opening lead was the king of hearts, followed by a prompt shift to the three of diamonds, hop ing to put declarer to the guess if he did not hold the queen. De clarer’s play at this point makes no difference, but he did put up the king, which, of course, held. He then returned to his hand with the jack of clubs and took the spade finesse. North was somewhat critical or his play, contending that the finesse should not have been taken with 10 trumps. South referred to the per centage tables to show that the finesse was the proper procedure with three cards missing. “After all,” he pleaded, “I didn't have a look.” North was right, but not for the reason he assigned. He too had missed the point. It is true that percentages favor the finesse with 10 when the king is missing. But declarer had a bet ter clue than the percentage tables. At the end of trick two, West is marked almost to a certainty with the ace-king of hearts and the ace of diamonds. If he also held the guarded king of spades it is quite in conceivable that he would have chosen to pass as dealer. A player will frequently pass a holding of three honor tricks, but it is not sound business to count on any one having passed three and a half tricks. East is therefore marked with the king of spades, and the only hope is that it is alone. To pick off the single king would have been a good illustration of playing by ear. Tomorrow’s Problem. As East you hold: 4 Q 5 3 J 5 OA 10 9 872 452 The bidding has proceeded: West. North. East. 14 24 ? What do you bid? (Copyright. 1946. by Charles H Goren) Take My Word for It By FRANK COLBY. Readers’ Corner. Frankfort: Please settle a dis pute. For anemic I say “uh-NEE mik.” My friend insists on "uh NEM-ik.’t* Who’s right?—B. S. Answer—The prevailing Ameri can pronunciation is: uh-NEE-mik. The British “uh-NEM-ik” is obso lete in American usage. Louisville: How did the “som', get into the word ensemble?—E. K. Answer—The customary Ameri can pronunciation, ahn-SAHM-b'l, is patterned after, but actually is quite unlike, the French pronunci ation. In French, the vowel sound of the' first and second syllables is nasalized as indicated by the Colby symbol: (N). The third syllable, -ble. is a soft “bluh” vanish, thus: ah(n)-SAH(N)-bluh. In attempt ing the French pronunciation, some announcers say: “ah-SAHM,'’ which is neither French nor English. Los Angeles: Colby, you’re wrong! You insist that you were correct in saying that your assistant, fog brained old Dr. Etaoin Shrdlu, “con sulted shelffuls of books.’’ Sorry, but your other critic was right—it should be “shelves full of books.”— W. W. T. Answer—Sorry, but Doc S. did not consult the shelves, full or emp ty. He pawed through the books from the shelves. Let's look at it in this light: One cannot consult a shelf full of books. Books must be removed from the shelf before they can be opened and read. And old Doc S. wras doing just that—consulting books by the shelffuls. As a matter of fact, the shelves themselves were practically empty. Later, however, when he had fin ished reading the shelffuls of books, he returned them to the shelves, and then, and only then, were the shelves full of books. See what I mean?
