Facilities for Tuberculosis Deplored Charging that the facilities for caring for tuberculosis in the Dis trict have not improved since 1940 ] speakers at a meeting of the Dis- I trict Tuberculosis Association last night in the National Museum ex- ' pressed concern over the absence of any announced program for control of the disease here. Lack of nurses and bed space for tuberculosis victims are two of the most acute problems facing resi dents of the District, it was said. Pointing out that there are only 12 nurses alloted to tuberculosis nursing by the Public Health Nursing Bureau, Miss Gertrude Bowling, executive director of the Instructive Visiting Nurse Society, deplored the extreme shortage of nurses in every tuberculosis hos pital in Washington. Pay Boosts May Help. “Gaps” in tuberculosis nursing service may begin to be filled, she said, by paying nurses a better salary. Dr. Roy L. Sexton, chairman of the Public Health Committee of the Washington Board of Trade, said at least 1,500 hospital beds are needed for proper treatment of sufferers of the disease. “We have only 1,167 and of those 300 are closed because of a short age of help,” he said. Dr. Sterling Lloyd, chairman of the Tuberculosis Committee of the Medico-Chirurgical Society, struck at the lack of personnel to carry out an adequate rehabilitation program for patients who are about to be . cured. I Cost Cited. 1 In a summary of the cost in sick ness, death and money in the Dis trict, it was reported that at least 600 persons die from the disease each year, 4,000 persons have known cases and an estimated 6,000 others are victims. Total cost for treat-! ment of the disease, which ranks! fourth in mortality in the District,1 is $1,900,000 yearly.
