The concert was sponsored by the St. Andrews (Scottish) Society of Washington and directed by Charles Dana Beaschler, whose choice of numbers reflected the spirit of the benefit. The red-robed choristers, number ing 160 members, formed a circle of several tiers at the back of the stage, with the fore part occupied by the excellent ensemble drawn from the National Symphony Or chestra. The orchestral accompani ment was augmented by the organ, played by William Watkins, organist of the First Congregational Church, and by Karlian Meyer, pianist, who is also organist of the New York Avenue Presbyterian Church. Geoffrey O’Hara’s arrangement of "The Star Spangled Banner” opened the program, the choral setting of the national anthem introducing new harmonies into the melody that carried it beyond even the familiar uncomfortable range but which showed off the voices to advantage. So well balanced are the choral sec tions and of such uniformity in quality tnat the singers produce an orchestral volume and richness of ! sound. iney are excenenuy trained in effects and have a wide range of dynamics at command that reach the final tonal mellowness, however, in the pianissimo and mezzoforte passages. The group of anthems: Wood's “Expectants, Expectavi," Jennings’ “Springs in the Desert,” Baker's “O Lord God, Unto Whom Vengeance Belongeth,” were numbers demanding expert vocal tinting and in these the skill of the group was fully apparent. “Ye Nations, Offer to the Lord,” from Mendelssohn’s "Hymn of Praise,” and the "Sanc tus,” from Verdi’s "Requiem,” drew forth the splendid power of the en semble with the sopranos carrying the high register with surety and purity of tone. The soloist of the program was the Australian baritone, Robert C. Nicholson, whose superb voice and musicianship disclosed the full beauty of the “Offertorio” and the "Motetto” from Sgambati's "Messa da Requiem.” He was also heard in solo portions in the anthems. The “Adagio” and “Allegro” from Handel's organ “Concerto No. 10” was played by Mr. Watkins with orchestral accompaniments and he was heard later in Simmonds’ “Do rian Prelude” and Dupre’s “Prelude and Fugue in G minor.” His per formance was admirable for its clarity in phrasing and for tech nical smoothness, his registration in the concerto in particular being varied and colorful. The program concluded with "Be hold God the Lord” from Mendels sohn’s “Elijah,” the “Kyrie Eleison” from Bach's "Mass in B Minor,” “Worthy Is the Lamb” from Han del's “The Messiah,” the spirituals: Dawson's “Galm in Gilead,” in -j 30-Day Charge Accounts Invited j ^sunshine playclothes 1225 F St. N.W.
