story. A young photogenic damsel
who had written a best seller was
suffering from amnesia and con
cealed — where? Where was the
point. I< was hinted that the FBI
was on the prowl. The Immigra
tion Department was investigating.
The newspapers buzzed.
Lily was, first, gratified at the
publicity; then annoyed at the in
creasing inquisitiveness; finally
terrified of the possible embarrass
ing results.
Though the Contessa had moved
from her dreary room to a cheerful
little apartment, Lily had kept
her well under cover. But now this
no longer seemed safe. "We must
flee,” Lily told her dramatically.
"You and L We must go to the
Berkshires. Jason has a house
there."
The Contessa deprecated this
hasty move. “Perhaps I should
confess that I have perpetrated a
hoax.” she suggested.
“It was I who perpetrated it,”
Lily groaned.
The Contessa twinkled. “>Io
no,” she said, “you merely advised
me that when in New York I
should do as the New Yorkers.”
“We must admit nothing.” said
Lily, “until Horace gets back. If
only that wretched man would an
swer my cables!” For Horace
seemed to have vanished into the
Roman blue.
“We’ll drive up tonight,” Lily
decided. “No one will know. No
one will find us. The thing to do,”
she assured the Contessa, "is to
remain'entirely calm.”
On the following evening, Jason
phoned his pearl. “How are you
making out?” he asked.
“Fine,” said Lily stoutly. They
had not opened up the house this
summer, and the place, actually,
was a mess.
"Did you get old man Semp
hill to turn on the water?” Jason
asked.
“Something's wrong with the
pump. But we’ll get it fixed to
morrow.”
Jason gave a mean chuckle, and
Lily ground her teeth. Pride had
prevented her from confiding to
Jason her fears and tremors. When
he had asked from time to time,
and with maddening masculine
superiority, if her publishing ven
ture wasn't getting a little too hot,
she had lightly laughed it off.
Heartily she wished now that she
had never got herself out on such
a limb.
“By the way,” said Jason,
“there's a cable here for you. Shall
I read it to you?”
Lily reflected. She didn’t want
Jason to read it — but on the
other hand it must be from Horace,
and she had to know what he said.
“Yes, do,” she said.
"Hmm — well, this sounds
screwy. Listen:
“ 'Something very strange is hap
pening stop You have been deceived
by an imposter stop More later.
Horace'
I say, Lily, can you add that up?"
“No," said Lily faintly.
“You sound tired.” Jason's voice
was warm with solicitude. “Sure
you’re all right?”
“Perfectly splendid," said Lily
with determined cheer, "Darling!”
