Weed killer is sprayed on honeysuckle and poison ivy as a part of the Montgomery County program. Joe Huttons, farm bureau secretary is atop the truck; Jack Arnold holds the spray, and Mr Smoll operates the motor. By JAMES BIRCHFIELD THE MONTGOMERY COUNTY iMd.i Farm Bureau this summer is bringing new contentment to hundreds of the county's prize dairy cows and. indirectly, an increased flow of milk to Washington homes Cows without flies are con tented cows and contented cows give from a pint to a quart more milk a day. James D. King, president of the or ganization. says. To rid the county’s dairy barns and cows of flies the Farm Bureau has purchased from the Govern ment a surplus 400-gallon, high - pressure spray outfit mounted on a truck, and will treat more than K00 farms with a 1 per cent solution of DDT Visiting from seven to nine farms a day. the bureau's spray crew treats dairy and. horse barns, poultry houses, pig pens and even the farm er's porches with DDT. The secret of the effective ness of DDT m the low con cent ration used lies in the high pressure spray which ap plies the solution in droplets under 300 pounds pressure. A white residue remains on the walls and ceilings that will give lly control for a period of several months. Aside from increasing milk production through content ed cows the use of DDT in dairy barns and other farm buildings aids in sanitation. In addition to covering dairy barns and animals, the treat ment of other buildings, such as poultry houses, hog lots and stock barns, will erad icate lly breeding places. 'Hie bureau also plans to use the spray outfit to con trol honeysuckle and poison ivy along fence rows through out the county. In this pro gram an .R per cent solution of 2. 4-D. the recently per lected chemical, will be used DDT is sprayed in pig pens to kill flics where they breed.
