Reds Seek Key Posts,
Racial Conference
Chairman Declares
Charges that Communists 'were
attempting to seat themselves on
the txecutive Committee of the
Confaence for Racial Democracy
were hurled today following an ex
plosive meeting of the organization
yesteiday.
The charges were made by Dr. E.
B. Henderson. who as acting chair
man pf the conference had opposed
effort of one faction to increase the
numtj?r of committeemen who
youltj represent groups interested in
comb» ting racial segregation.
There were some individuals of
Communistic leanings representing
gioupt not necessarily inclined to
those ideals.” Dr. Henderson said.

son sitting on the committee.”
Two-Day Meeting.
The conference met Saturday for
• twq-dav panel discussion and the
election of a permanent committee
to supplant a 28-member tempoiarv
committee. As acting chairman.
Dr. flenderson said he was in favor
of enlarging Hie committee member
ship. but thought anything ap
proaching 100 members would not
be gpod.
Leiding the fight for a larger
committee was John Thointon.
member of the acting committee,
who discussed Dr. Henderson and
Miss Ida Fox, executive secretary,
with ‘packing'' the Nominating
Comjiittee which named candidates
to permanent positions.
Mi; Thornton said that it was
apparent a certain clique was at
tempting to gain control, and sug
«as ted that "those who don't agree
making this a political football get
together and form our own commit
tee that really will help the Negro."
Denying the "packing" charge,
i Dr. Henderson said only four of the
i original nominating committeemen
I weie acting yesterday with six
i others just elected.
Attended by representatives of
racial equality groups seeking to
co-ordinate activities, the confer
ence was held at Asbury Methodist
Church. Eleventh and K streets
N.W. In a compromise move. 80
committeemen were elected. They
will meet July 15 to elect an exec
utive committee of 15 and perma
nent officers.
Panel Called Success.
Dr. Henderson called the panel
discussions among the best ever held
here. As leader of the panel on
education and recreation, he called
I for a program of interracial cultural
j education In the schools. He said
j colored children now make up 44.4
| per cent of District public schools
'and "soon may be In the majority."
' Dr. Henderson called for nonsegre
1 "ation in athletics and recreation.
Discrimination against colored
physicians attending their patients
in Gallinger and other hospitals was
hit in the panel on housing and
health, led by Robert G. Wilson,
president of the Washington Urban
League. Housing covenants also
were scored as forcing much of the
colored population to live in
"ghettos."
A panel on discrimination In em
ployment, led by Dr. Joseph H. B.
Evans, objected to practices of some
companies and to "discrimination"
shown by the United States Em
ployment Service.

Urged by Farm Union Heai
Early approval of the Douglas
bill, creating the Franklin Delanc
Roosevelt Memorial Redwood Park
in California, was urged today by
President James G. Patton of the
National Farmers Union.
In a letter to Chairman Flanagan
of the House Agriculture Committee.
Mr. Patton said the National Farm
ers Union strongly indorses the bill
and hooes the committee can report
out the measure "speedily and
favorably."
He said it seemed especially ap
priat.e that the tract In four Cali-1
fornia counties would be chosen "for ■
this dedication to his great spirit.!
