Navy's Biggest Plane, 92-Ton
Constitution, Soon to Be Tested
The biggest airplane ever built for
|the Navy was described herein de
tail for the first time yesterday as
a 92-ton transport capable of fly
ing 180 passengers and crewmen at
more than 300 miles an hour at a
practical range of at least 5,000
miles and a maximum range of 7,000
Miles.
* The giant Constitution was
wheeled into public view yesterday
afternoon at the Lockheed plant,
Burbank, Calif., and should be ready
for maiden flight tests by Septem
ber 20, according to Vice Admiral

of Naval Operations for Air.
Research, design and engineering
on the great ship were begun dur
ing the dark days of 1943 when
the Navy was striving to meet the
need for swift transportation to its
far-flung bases in the Pacific.
It was planned then to build 50
Constitutions at an estimated cost
of about $2,225,000 each.
The original contract with Lock
heed, however, called for only two,
and both of these will be ready for!
acceptance tests this fall, it was
said. Admiral Radford told a press
conference the Navy has no plans
for additional Constitutions, and
probably will offer no objection if
more are produced for commercial
service.
Because only two were produced,
the cost to the Navy will be about
$27,000,000, most of which went for
research, design, engineering and
tooling for production, it was said.
The transports have wing spreads
of 189 feet, an overall lenght of i
156 feet, and will carry useful loads
up to 69,000 pounds. They are
powered with four Wasp major
engines turning up 12,000 horse
power at take-off, and are equipped
with the latest radar gear for exact
navigation.

The planes were designed to op
erate in and out of moderate-sized
airports in the Pacific area. Their
minimum stalling speed is rated as
low as 80 miles an hour and accord
ing to the Navy, they can land or
take off after runs of less than half
a mile.
Brakes on the main landing
wheels, which consist of four wheels
under each wing and two under the
nose, can be assisted by reversible
propellers on the two inboard
engines.
Additional strength was built into
the transports to permit the event
ual installation of more powerful
engines when they are developed,
