Parks Have a Birthday

TODAY THE NATIONAL
PARK SERVICE, the agency
< reated by Woodrow Wilson
to conserve the cream of the
cenic and historic heritage
if America, is 30 years old.
But the national park con
cept goes back farther than
that—to a night in 1870 when
.1 group of Western explorers
around their campfire laid
plans to press for national
preservation of the Yellow
done region. For many
vears, however, Yellowstone
and 13 other parks and 21 na
tional monuments, created to
keep it company, were mere
stepchildren of the Interior
Department.
Since 1916 the number of
parks has been nearly doubled
Number 27. Isle Royale Na
tional Park in Lake Superior,
will be dedicated on Tuesday.
I'he number of national mon
uments, smaller areas set
aside to preserve some specific
scenic feature or an area of
historic importance, has
grown to 124. and to this sys
tem of parks and monuments
have been added recreational
demonstration areas and that
newest feature of the coun
try’s park system, the na
tional parkway, of which four
now are under construction.
While the first parks were
Western, the Government
now recognizes the value of
incorporating Eastern areas
into the system. From this
policy have stemmed Great
Smoky National Park on the
Carolina - Tennessee border,
Shenandoah National Park,
Mammoth Cave National Park
and Acadia National Park,
plus all four of the parkways,
the George Washington Me
morial in the Washington*
area, the Blue Ridge, the
Natchez Trace and the Foot
hills.
Washington’s own park sys
tem, unlike that ol other
cities, is a part of the na
tional system and comes un
der a 'special field branch of
the service known as the
Office of National Capital
Parks.
Closest national park to the
Capital, to use the term "na
tional park" m its real sense,
is Shenandoah, a 100-mile
strip of Virginia's scenic Blue
Ridge range.
Skyline Drive, which tops
the crest ol the Blue Ridge
through the park, is to hook
up with the northern end of
the Blue Ridge National Park
way. which will link the Shen
andoah with Great Smoky
Mountains National Park and
place a 600-mile scenic motor
tour virtually at the thresh
old of the District.
Today the National Park
Service is a going concern, a
far cry from the few far
sighted individuals who
fought the greed of commer
cial enterprise in the early
days in order to preserve the
scenic beauty of the Nation.
