The little animal is a native of far northern places, and stays away from lands which are very far south i of the Arctic Circle. j The chief homeland of lemmings i is Scandinavia. Norway and Sweden have millions of them. ! Lemmings belong to the same family as mice ana rats. They look a great deal like large meadow i mice, their bodies being about five inches long. i The lemmings of Scandinavia live chiefly in wild fields In the I midst of mountains. The females produce young twice a year, usually in broods of five. As time goes on, the lemmings j find that their food supply is too small. To meet this trouble, they i start a migration. Many of them, if not most, start marching down the mountains. Moving eastward or westward, the ! lemmings eat all manner of plants. Farmers fear to have them come, since they destroy all growing crops I in their path. When they reach rivers, lemmings swim across. They also make their way over large marshes. A migration may last for months, or even for years. During this period, the animals are attacked by birds and beasts. From time to time, they halt their march to take care of new broods of young. It is believed that in some cases, at least, I the number in a swarm is greater when it reaches the sea than at the | start of the migration. The loss from enemies met along the way is less than the increase from new : broods of young! The lemmings which move east i ward at length reach the Gulf of Bothnia. Then they do a strange j thing—they plunge into the salt water and try to swim to Finland! Other lemmings reach the western coast of Norway, and start to swim | across the Atlantic Ocean. Those lemmings are doomed to drown, except in a few cases where they reach islands within east range of the coast. It has been said that the animals “commit suicide,” and they do in a sense. Probably, however, they simply mistake the salt water for a river. If they had more sense, they would turn back before they drowned. UNCLE RAY.
