Peterson, 53. assistant chief disburs
ing officer of the United States, who
died Tuesday at Sibley Hospital, will
be held at 2 p.m. tomorrow at
Christ Episcopal Church, 620 G
street S.E. Burial will be in Ar
lington Cemetery.
Mr. Peterson, who lived at 3351
Denver street S.E.. had been with
the Government for 30 years and
with the Treasury Department the
last 15 years. He returned to his
position as assistant disbursing offi
cer in January after a four-year
absence on active duty with ’ the
Navy. Serving as a commander, he
was in charge of the property ac
counting office of the Navy’s Bureau
of Supplies and Accounts during
the war.
Born in Stoneham. Mass., Mr.
Peterson was educated at Spring
field (Mass.) College and received
a degree in accounting from South
eastern University.
During his Government career he
was sent at one time as a member
of a committee to set up accounting
systems for the territories of Hawaii
and the Virgin Islands. He also
had made a study of the accounting
system in Panama.
He was senior warden of Christ
Episcopal Church.
Surviving are his widow. Mrs.
Mary Wood Peterson; his mother.
Mrs. Elsie S. Peterson; two sisters,|
Mrs. Raymond Bicknell and Mrs.
Edward Noonan, all of Stoneham;
and two brothers, Paul L. Peterson.

William Scott Drinkwater. 29,
formerly of Washington, died Tues
day in Chicago after an illness of
six months, it was learned here yes
terday.
Mr. Drinkwater lived at 4825 Rod
man street N.W.. with his mother.
Mrs. Marie Scoti Drinkwater. and
his father, Charles M. Drinkwater,
who died in 1944.
He had been the general managci
of the C. M. Drinkwater Co. of Chi
cago, which manufactured mobile
food carts and other equipment for
the armed services. His father in
vented the food carts during World
War I and was requested by the
Army to reopen his firm at the be
ginning of World War II.
Mr. Drinkwater was a graduate of
the Illinois Institute of Technology
and Armour College of Engineering.
He served for a short time in the
infantry during the war until fur
loughed on the death of his father.
Besides his mother, who now lives
at 1016 Judson avenue, Evanston,
Ili., he is survived by his widow,
Mrs. June N. Drinkwater: a brother,
Charles M., jr.. and a sister. Miss
Nancy Marie Drinkwater, all of Chi

Native of District, Dies
James S. Talbott, 70, native of
Washington, died recently in South
Gate, Calif., where he had lived
sipce 1944, it was learned here last
night. Masonic services were held
and burial was in Los Angeles.
Mr. Talbott moved to Chicago
early in life and served in the Post
Office there for 24 years. He re
turned to the District in 1924 and
remained here in Government serv
ice until transferred in 1941 to
Cincinnati by the Agriculture De
partment. He retired in May 1944.
Mr. Talbott was a past master of
a Chicago Masonic lodge, a grand
lecturer of Illinois, and a member
of Lafayette Lodge No. 19, F.A.A.M.,
here.
He is survived by his widow, Mrs.
Grayce Talbott, a daughter, Mrs.
Donald A. O’Bryan, a grandson,
Neal Talbott O'Bryan, all of Cali

Dies in London at 80

LONDON, Aug. 29 —Field Marshal
Lord Cavan, 80, chief of the British
Imperial General Staff from 1922
to 1926. whose military career ex
tended from the South African War,
died yesterday in a London nursing
home.
The 10th Earl of Cavan, the field
marshal commanded the troops dur
ing the coronation of George VI.
and from 1920 to 1922 had served
as aide de camp to King George V.
He was in charge of operations of
the 10th Italian Army on the Piave
front in 1918. He was made a field
marshal in 1932.
Dr. Ernest Groves Dies;

CHAPEL HILL, N. C., Aug. 29.—
Dr. Ernest R. Groves, 59, professor
of sociology at the University of
North Carolina and considered an
authority on marriage and family
life, died last night at Arlington,
Mass., university officials said today.
The cause of death was not known
here. His wife, the former Gladys
Hoagland of Concord, Mass., was
with him.
Dr. Groves had been teaching this
summer at Boston University.
He had written 15 books on mar
riage and the family. One, ‘'Shall
I Marry Now?” was distributed by
the armed services during the war.

D. C. Polio Peak Reached,
Health Officials Report
District health officials said today
that the peak in polio cases this
year has been reached and that they
do not expect more than one or two
cases a month at the most for the
rest of the year.
The District |^as escaped the epi
demic proportions of polio cases
prevalent in most of the country
this year. There have been 67 cases
in the Metropolitan Area. 12 in
Washington and 55 in nearby Mary
land and Virginia.
Meanwhile, the United States
Public Health Service reported that
the peak has been reached this year
for the entire country. The number
of cases throughout the country
dropped last week for the first time
since May 25. Despite the drop,
however, the number of polio vic
tims this year is expected to be the
largest since 1916.

Mr. Browning was sales manager
of the William H. Saunders Real
Estate Co., with which he had served
four years. Before that he had been
associated with other real estate
firms here since 1924 He was a
member of the Real Estate Board
and the Society of Residential Ap

He is survived by his widow, Mrs.
Ruth Millard Browning; a daughter,

an officer also in several corpora
tions in which the Busch family
