D. C. Bureau Registers 6,119 New Autos In Seven Months By Donald B. Hadley Titles for 6,119 new automobiles were registered in the District ol Columbia in the first seven months of this year, compared with only 473 a year ago. the Traffic Bureau an nounced today. However, the total was less than a fourth of the 25.794 new cars regis tered here in the same prewar 1941 period. In July, 1,681 new car titles were recorded. This was the largest monthly total since the war. Month totals for seven months of 1946 and 1945 are compared below: 1946 1945 January _ 336 M February - 303 71 March_ 406 72 April _ 8,0 78 May .I!_ 1,480 6f June_ »48 64 July _1,681 64 Used-Car Sales Rise. Regarded as a barometer of used car sales, title transfers in the Dis trict during July aggregated 3,632 vs. 3,034 in the previous month and 2,025 a year ago. For seven months, title transfers rose to 29,310 vs. 15, 041 a year ago and 47,330 in the •ame 1941 period. Old cars displaced by new models apparently are being passed on down the line to those who have still older machines or none at all. The result has been an upturn in total motor registrations. Gross registrations on July 31, transfers and the net total after deduction of transfers are compared below with corresponring figures for a year ago and 1941: Gross Trans.- Net. total. fers. otal. 1941 184.779 18.893 165,886 1946 108,283 1,308 106,974 1946 -_ 117,729 3.187 114,542 Congestion Increases. With District registrations climb ing steadily, the District Highway Survey has found traffic already above 1941 levels at most testing sta tions. Nearby sections, which have grown substantially during the war also are pouring an increasing stream of vehicles into the down town congestion. An interesting result of the vehic ular traffic congestion has been a pickup in transit volume. Capital Transit carried 34.431,562 revenue passengers in July vs. 34.306,302 in the previous month and 34,304,778 a year ago. July was the first 1946 month to show a gain from a year earlier. Volume for the first quar ter was 5% below a year earlier; for the first half, only 3.6% and for the seven months only 3% behind. Dickie Receives Tribute.
