'The Big Sleep,’ at the Earle, A Corpse-Strewn Melodrama By Harry MacArthur The Big Sleep,” In which Lauren Bacall again sullenly woos Hum phrey Bogart, is a picture that makes more corpses than sense. Adaptec from a novel by Raymond Chandler, it has a higher mortality rate foi actors than anything you have seen in weeks. At least six are shot dead another is invited to toss off a poison potion and still another is dropped off a pier in an automobile, while Bogart, playing Chandler's detective rim maiiuwc, is Kivru h. uiuiuugn going over by thugs on a couple of occasions. While all this rough by-plav Is under way. however, it never does become quite clear just what Mar lowe is after. True, he is called in by an aging millionaire to investigate a bit of blackmail. This much is clear. But not much else is after Marlowe begins delving into the affairs of the millionaire's two beau tiful daughters, one a spoiled, slefisli type who likes to gamble and the other a spoiled, selfish type who not only likes to gamble but Is something of a dipsomaniac as well and goes about sucking her thumb and gig gling. The real [problem, it soon becomes apparent, [ is what happened to a fellow named Regan, a hired companion of the millionaire, who suddenly has be come missing at the same time the gambler's wife became missing. The detective discovers that it is un healthy to mention the name of Regan, one fellow to mention It being the chap invited to drink the glass of poison. Marlowe himself, for bringing up the matter, is set upon once by a pair of handy men who work both sides, one slugging him in the midriff until he doubles up. the other pounding him in the kidneys until he straightens out for the first to get back to work, and another time he is poked in the jaw by a man with a handful of silver coins, an effective way of being slugged. These things arouse the detec tive's suspicions. So the Regan matter becomes something he must solve. Also, he has fallen in love with the less repulsive of these whimsical heiresses he is supposed to be protecting. Complicated and vague as all LOANS On Diamonds, Watches. Jewelry, Cameras, Guns, Etc.
