Norma’s Back and Enterprise Adds Her Name to Its List By Horry MocArthur New firm names in the film news have been popping up with the frequency of Russian vetoes in recent months. Up until the Government decided such manipulation bore a slight resemblance to income tax j evasion, many of these new names identified once-and-done affairs, wherein a couple of stars and a director, say, would band together, make and sell a picture, then pay the 25 per cent capital gains tax, rather than the much higher income taxes. Some other newcomers in the producing ranks, howevA, are corporations formed in much the spirit oi me Riaywrignts company m Nev York, by men who decided to ge together and make the kind o movies they wanted to make. One of these latter is Liberty Films in which Frank Capra and severa other talented film makers are in volved. Another is Enterprise Pic tures, formed a year ago by Charlii Einfeld and David Loe^. Einfeld, a the time was a man who had jus decided not to be head of the Warnei Bros, publicity department an; longer, in spite of an offer by thf studio to raise his $3,500-a-weeic sal ary. Loew was an independent pro ducer, among other things having been co-producer of “So Ends Out Night”, and “Moon and Sixpence.” * * * * With the signing a week ago oi Norma Shearer, not seen on the screen since she made ‘We Were Dancing” and “Her Cardboard Lover” in 1942, Hollywood looked up and decided that the partners had selected the proper name, for their cinema venture. Since Joan Craw ford's rather spectacular comeback last year, producers have been urging an end of retirement upon Miss Shearer, a long-time stablemate of Miss Crawford's at Metro-Goldwyn Mayer. A number of p>eople thought she might return, if she returned at Rll, to Metro, since she reportedly owns a sizable amount of stock in - he company. Her signing with En terprise is not too surprising, though, as Mr. Loew is a former associate of Irving Thalberg, Miss Shearer's late husband. Enterprise started being enter prising with its first move, which was to acquire “Arch of Triumph.” the Erich Mariq, Remarque novel which virtually cried for translation to the screen. Then they took over a studio while others were combing -he town for studio space unsuccess r*-—-. ,! fully, and began to sign stars. Ingrid Bergman and Charles Boyer are ap i pearing in “Arch of Triumph" and ,' other Enterprise productions will be made by Ginger Rogers, Barbara j Stanwyck. John Garfield and Joel . j McCrea. Mr. Einfeld seems to have known what he was doing when he turned down that raise and struck out for himself. * * * * That recent visit of Joseph Breen to Great Britain to tell the British film producers about our produc tion code has had some immediate results. A visitor to the set where Michael Balcon is filming Dickens' “Nicholas Nickleby" for the J. Ar thur Rank Organization, tells of coming on a clear-cut compromise between principle and the American market. He reports the new bi lingual technique used for the pro tection of American movie audi ences as follows: “An actor made a small scene using the word 'demmit’ all the way through. When the scene was finally shot to the satisfaction of the director, it started all over again. Same scene, but this time the 'demrnits’ became 'dash its.’” * * * * The bulletin board: “The Kid ; Prom Brooklyn," with Danny Kaye in the leading role, opened today | at Keith’s. . . . Fallen Sparrow,” ! with John Garfield and Maureen OHara. has joined Bing Crosby’s “East Side of Heaven" at the Little. Both will be replaced Wednesday by “Jane Eyre.” . . . “The Curtain Rises" starts its second week tomor row at the Olney Theater.
