Danny Kaye, 'The New Champ,’ In Happy Frolic at Keith’s By Horry MocArthur The comic talent of Danny Kaye is put to good use in "The Kid from Brooklyn,” Samuel Goldwyn's latest Technicolor filmusical, which opened yesterday at Keith's. Mr.'Kaye is quite a funny young man. And the script that has been provided for hint here—a new adaptation of that old comedy about the meek milkman who became world middle weight champion through no fighting ability of his own—allows him to run something very like wild. Mr. Goldwyn has hired an able sup porting cast ior ms comic, too, one that includes pretty Virginia Mayo, Vera-Ellen, Eve Arden, Walter Abel, Lionel Stander and Fay Bainter, among others. There are the well known Goldwyn Girls, too, plus some music, and as elaborate a production as the stage technicians could devise. Altogether, it is quite a package of frolicsome entertainment. A vague memory of Harold Lloyd is this same role long ago seems to recall a slightly more serious ap proach in that earlier version of the story, or at least an approach from a different angle, but the yam has not suffered in this new trans lation. In fact, as it now has been arranged for Mr. Kaye by a platoon of writers including Don Hartman, Melville Shavelson, Grover Jones, Frank Butler and Richard Connell, it is a fresh and lively comedy. ¥ * * * Director Norman Z. McLeod's Usually is a deft hand with films that are supposed to be fast and funny and he has seen to it that this one is generally both. “The Kid from Brooklyn” provides a number of more or less memorable comedy moments while Burleigh •Tiger” Sullivan is dancing his way OYSTERS Are in Season! A notable one is the scene at his first fight, when the referee says "You boys know all the rules no low punches break clean in the clinches go to your corners and come out fighting any questions?” "Yes,” says Burleigh. “Can I write all that dowm.” It is quite something, too. to watch Burleigh learn boxing from Miss Arden in waltz time to the tune of "The Blue Danube.” And it also is a fine moment when Burleigh demonstrates his ducking technique to the society matron played by Miss Bainter, a demon stration which winds up with a wild slugging match (no hits scored) in her living room. "The Kid from Brooklyn” is, of course, Danny Kaye's film, but some of the others contribute notably to it. Among them are Vera-Ellen, who has a pair of dancing moments that are fine; Miss Mayo, who sings a couple of songs and provides inci dental decoration, and the Goldwyn Girls who provide additional deco ration. The performances by Miss Arden, Mr. Abel and Mr. Stander are their standard characters, but there is no doubting that they are expert at them. Being Danny Kaye’s picture, there is, naturally, one of those rare mo ments when he dons that Russian accent for a song. Maxwell An derson’s “Joan of Lorraine.” to be staged by the Playwrights Company with Ingrid Bergman in the starring role, will have its premiere perform ance at George Washington Uni versity’s handsome Lisner Audi torium the night of October 28, running there for three weeks prior to the New York engagement. Since the auditorium was built a number of New York’s producers have made overtures to the univer sity with an eye toward using it to double the number of stages avail able here. The Playwrights Com pany was dickering last year, but nothing seems to have come of its hopes until now. The announce ment of the “Joan of Lorraine” opening at the Lisner Auditorium does not say that an agreement has been reached to bring other produc tions of the Playwrights to the rame place, but it does hint at the filling of a long-felt need by "an additional house in Washington for the better offerings of music and drama.” It is probable that each attraction playing the Lisner Auditorium would have to be booked individually, as the previous bar to such use has been a reported feeling on the part of university officials that consider able discrimination should be al lowed them in the matter of plays on the university’s own stage. We know of some ballet companies who would love the place, after these grim years on that Constitution Hall platform. AMUSEMENTS. Jp Jive TV" UAY 11 i9»»mjzir 2 i * j ^ UL'HI. Mervyn Le Roy tell* me that his remake of "Little Women" goes Into production September 15. And that the present lineup is Jennifer Jones, Diana Lynn and Bambi Linn from the stage hit, "Carousel.” Bambi is Meg and has the dying scene—always good for a jump to fame. Charles Coburn will be the grandfather and Anne Revere the mother. Also in the movie will be John Dali, who recently obtained his film-acting freedom from War ners and is getting $100,000 a pic ture at Selznick's studio. When Paramount gets around to remaking “The Winning of Bar bara Worth,” the leading men will be Joel McCrea and Don De Fore. This was the movie in which Gary Cooper made his first hit. . . . Marlene Dietrich's current deal with Paramount is for one picture only, her current “Golden Earrings.” I suggest they grab her now to a long-term contract because I’ve never seen her looking better and Director Mitchell Leisen tells me that she never has been In better acting form. I think they are overdoing the George Sanders-hates-women pub licity. Now George has been as signed “Personal Column” in which he has something to do with the disappearance of a series of beauti ful women. But If George Is as rude to these beautiful women as he Is to women in real life, I'd doubt whether he could get close enough to them to make them disappear. ... It surprised practically no one when Norma Shearer signed with Enterprise for a return to pictures. Now watch for all the old-timers to come back, including Garbo and Gloria Swanson. . . . The stories of the return of Maurice Chevalier to Hollywood would seem to be premature, because he is due to make "Golden Silence” In Paris next month. The rumor mongers had Chevalier coming to Hollywood In September. * * * * Vincent Price has taken off his Lord Almsbury wig (from "Forever Amber”) for something more mod ern in RKO's “A Time to Kill” with Henry Fonda, Barbara Bel Geddes and probably Anne Jeffreys. ... I chatted with Myma Loy on the set of “The Bachelor and the Bobby soxer.” She told me that she had i talked with William Powell for one j whole hour on the telephone and i now it is certain that their next picture together will be “The Song of the Thin Man” at Metro.
