Clergy Gives Support
ToTeaching Religions'
Principles in Schools
Leading clergymen of Washing
ton generally look with favor on
the recommendation of a citizens’
committee that the principles of
all religions be taugnt in thp pub
lic, parochial and private schools,
a survey indicated ioday.
Reaction of most '.oral clergymen
who were queried was summed up
in a statement bv the Rev. M.
Chandler Stith. executive secre
tary of the District Baptist Con
vention, that "the essence of the
proposal lies in the spirit in which
it will be done."
The Rev. Mr. Stith, in indorsing
the recommendation, declared "it
was a very important proposal and
should be gone into very care
fully.’’
wouia Avoid murcn Dogma.
The suggestion, put forth by a
citizens’ committee Saturday as
part of a report issued by C. M.
Pierce, director of The Social Sur
vey. urged the schools to teach the
basic principles and contributions
of all religion to American life. It
also recommended that inter-faith
representatives and mutually ac
ceptable educational authorities
confer on the material to be taught,
noting that church dogma should
be avoided but the contribution of
each faith be included.
The report in which the recom
mendation appeared included a sur
verv of religious relations in the
District. The survey was one of a
series of local social surveys spon
sored by the Council of Social
Agencies and financed by the Com
munity Chest. The surveys are be
ing made by The Social Survey.
Canon Theodore O. Wedel, war
den of the College of Preachers at
the Washington Cathedral, de
clared, “I would be all for such a
project, as a true picture of his
tory cannot be taught without
bringing religion into it.” He as
serted that "some • id of objec
tive treatment showing the part the
various faiths have played in the
history of the world and of our
country” could be made.
Dr. Howard Stone Anderson of
First Congregational Church char
acterized the proposal as an “excel
lent one.” Calling it a "hopeful
sign.” he pointed out it would have
to be done on a co-operative basis
to be effective.
Catholic Viewpoint Presented.
The Rev. Dr. Leo J. McCormick,
superintendent of Catholic schools
of the Archdiocese of Baltimore and
Washington, said "interfaith groups
are conscious of the need of toler
ance and understanding” and noted
that "to the teacher in the Catholic
school the primary aim of educa
tion is to elevate, regulate and per
fect human nature in accordance
with the example of Christ.” He
pointed out that "religious beliefs
should be the core of every cur
riculum. but such religious beliefs
as are divinely established.”
"The Catholic teacher,” he said,
"sees but one science of God. one
divine revelation and one infallible
Teacher.”
Tlie citizens’ recommendation
was indorsed by the Rev. Edwin E.
Pieplow, pastor of Trinity Lutheran
Church as a means of broadening
the understanding of other faiths

Keneipp Again Assails
Drunken Driving, Cites
Serviceman's Case
The death of Policeman Donald
W. Downs, 27. struck last Saturday
bv a Fort Belvoir soldier accused
of being a hit-and-run driver and
of having been intoxicated, brought
from Traffic Director George E.
Keneipp today a condemnation of
drunken driving by servicemen in
Washington.
Pvt. James O. Claire. 21. operator
of the car that fatally injured'
Policeman Downs, was ordered held
for the grand jury after an inquest
yesterday. Authorities said they
would ask an indictment charging
second-degree murder.
Finds Lives Jeopardized.
Traffic Director George E. Keneipp
said he had in mind the Downs
fatality when he told the Optimist
Club yesterday that drunken driv
ing by some servicemen on Wash
ington streets "jeopardized the
lives of all of us, but especially
our children.”
He said he did not intend to single
out the comparative few military
personnel who operate automobiles
when "loaded down with beer and
whisky.” The results of drunken
driving in general often are so tragic
that he has begun "permanently re
voking the permits of some persons
convicted of driving while drunk." he
said.
SI.100 Raised for Family.
As police continued their efforts to
raise funds for the widow and four
children of Policeman Downs, No. 4
precinct station reported that ap
proximately *1,100 has been received
there to date.
Policeman Downs died Sunday at !
Emergency Hospital. Testimony at
the inquest showed he had been
hurled 62 feet by the automobile
driven by Pvt. Claire. The soldier,
in a reportedly stolen car, had been
pursued for 14 blocks by a motor
cycle policeman. He was captured
when he fled from the automobile
after leaving the scene of the acci
dent at Maine avenue and L street
S.W., where Policeman Downs was
directing traffic.
Second Man in Custody
In Slaying of 'Samaritan'.

SAVANNAH, Ga„ Sept. 4.—Inves- 1
tigation of the slaying of Miss Bertha
Mehrtens widened today after a
coroner's jury verdict that the 38
year-old woman, beloved for her
deeds of mercy, “came to her death
at the hands of Pete Coleman and
possibly an accomplice.”
Coleman. 26-,vear-old laborer, has
been held in jail here without charge
since Sunday, when the woman's
battered body was found near a
country road. She had been lured
from her home in Montgomery
Heights by a man who said a friend
had been hurt in an automobile
accident.
Chatham County Police Chief W.
P. Chapman revealed that a second
man was in jail at the time the
coroner’s jury reported that “pos
sibly an accomplice” was involved
He would not connect him specif
ically with the crime.
Coroner John H. Elliott said Miss
Mehrtens died of a broken neck. He
would not sav whether his autopsy
showed that she had been assaulted.
Coleman lived near Miss Mehrtens
home. Angry neighbors fired on the
police car that carried him to jail
W. A. Stephens, Coleman's uncle,
and his family were staying tempo
rarily- in Savannah awaiting the out
come of threats that their home
would be burned unless they left
Montgomery Heights by today.
At 6 a m., an hour after the dead
line Mr. Stephens said had been set
for him to move out. Chatham
County police reported “all quiet"
in the community.
