Discloses Deficit of
$7,185 for July

Washington Gas Light Company
today filed with the Public Utilities
Commission its monthly report
showing July operations resulted Ir
a loss of $7,185 compared with a
net income of $10,391 for July last
year, a decline of $17,576.
For seven months of the current
year, however, the company reported
net income of $991,427 compared
with $971,252 last year, a gain ol
$20,175.
Gross operating revenues for July
were $710,393 compared with $683.
858 for July last year, an increase ol
$26,535 Operating expenses wert
$680,618. an increase of $59,211, re
sulting in a decrease in net oper
ating revenues for the month ol
$32,676.
Total gas sales for July oi
1,043.898 thousand cubic feet com
pared with 998.606 last year Sale;
to District of Columbia customer;
during July amounted to 789.48C
thousand cubic feet compared with
757.633 a year ago.
Meters in service in the District
at the end of July totaled 166.9V
against 165.138 a year ago.

NEW YORK. Sept. Leading
stocks shifted to the minus column
in today’s market although activity
was the smallest of thei.week and
liquidating pressure never really
impressive.
Thursday’s rally was extended
moderately at the opening but bid
ding soon faded and the decline
resumed. While a few thin “blue
chips” dropped 6 or more points on
meager transactions, losses, on the
whole, ranged from fractions to 2.
Extreme declines were reduced
in the majority of cases at the close
and a smattering of modest ad
vances eventuated. Transfers for
tire full proceedings were in the
neighborhood of 1.700,000 shares.
Conspicuous on the ofTside, but
with most above the day's bottom,
were United States Steel, Bethle
hem. Youngstown Sheet. Chrysler,
General Motors, United States Rub
ber, Goodrich, Montgomery Ward.

CHICAGO. Sept, 6 -A*. —Grains moved
within a narrow range in a listleas trade
today. A minor short-eorerint movement
sent prices in wheat ahead about a cent
at one time, but the market soon fell back
to around the previous close
Offerings of cash oats bv the country
Increased, a fact which reduced buying
enthusiasm in futures of that grain Cash
dealers placed purchases on a to-arrlve
basts at about 60.000 bushels There
were also purchases of 66.000 bushels of
corn, mostly old crop grain.
Wheat finished % lower to % higher.

thin trading today. Early gains of as
much as 81.85 a bale were registered
on mill buying, along with some New
Orleans demand, and local short cover
ing.
The trend was reversed upon ihe appear
ance of persistent commission house liqui
dation. influenced by renewed weakness
in securities and expectations of a higher
Government cotton crop to be issued nex

returns from Chile's presidential
election gave Radical-Communist
Gabriel Gonzalez Videla a 50.000
vote lead over his nearest opponent
today, but not. under Chilean law.

Since he failed to win a clear ma
jority in the field of four in Wednes
day s polling, the final choice must
be made by va joint session of the
Chilean Congress, on or about Octo
ber 24, between Gonzales and his
closest competitor, Conservative
Eduardo Cruz Coke.
Final totals in the popular vote as
issued by the Interior Ministry:
Oonzales, 191,351, or approximately
10 per cent; Cruz, 141.134: Liberal
Fernando Alessandri, 129,092: Social
ist Bernardo Ibanez. 11,999: blank.

Gonzales already has proclaimed
himseif President-elect to succeed
the late Juan Antonio Rios on the
basis of the popular vote, but Cruz
insisted that the issue now is in the
lap of Congress, in which the Right
ists hold a slight majority.
Two Shots Fired at Home

ATHENS, Tenn . Sept . 6 — Two
shots were fired into the home of
City Alderman Hugh Riggs early
yesterday, McMinn County Sheriff
Knox Henry reported last night.
Athens was the scene of the recent
election gun battle during which the
political organization of Paul Can
trell was ousted
Sheriff Henry said he investigated
the shooting with Deputy Sheriff
W. O. Kennedy and Police Chief
Tony Pierce and reported that the
shots apparently were fired from
a slow-moving automobile, since the
angles at which the shots entered
the kitchen and dining room were
different.
The Veterans of Foreign Wars
and American Legion posts of Mc
Minn County asked Mr. Riggs to
resign after the August 1 election.
They called him a “Cantrell man.”
Mr. Riggs tendered his resignation
to Mayor Paul Walker but no action
has been taken.
Brokers' Loons Gain .
'$11,000,000 in Week

ported that loads to brokers and
dealers on securities held by mem
ber banks in New York City totaled
$1,011,000,000 Wednesday, an in
crease of $11,000,000 from a week
ago and a decrease of $771,000,000
from a year ago
Included was $645,000,000 lent to
purchase or carry United States
Government obligations, an increase
of $16,000,000 for the week.

Central Labor Union
To Mark 50th Year
At Dinner October 19
Organized in the days when labor
organizations were subject to em
ployer Intimidation and restrictive
statutes in many parts of the coun
try. the Washington Central Labor
Union <AFL> will celebrate its 50th
anniversary October 19 with a ban
quet at the Mayflower Hotel.
The organization now has about
100 affiliated locals with a combined
membership or 200,000 workers in
the Washington area
Charlea M. Andre, chairman, re
members the time when it wasn’t
so easy to get members—when the
plasterers' unit, for example, hesi
tated to mention the name of their
union openly, but referred to it in
code as "five stars."
Before the CLU was set up. Mr.
Andre related, an attempt to organ
ize a central council of organized
labor here wa,s made in 1881 by the
old Knights of Labor.
In 1881. the Federation of Labor
of the District was set up. with
printers, granite cutters, bricklayers.
; and later painters, tinners, plumbers,
paper hangers and stone cutters par
I ticipating.
This early labor organization dis
integrated, however, Mr. Andre said,
and its place was taken by the CLU,
: which was established at a meeting
in 1396 in Typographical Temple,
425 G street, at which Milford Spohn,
a bricklayer, was elected president.
By 1900, the CLU had 42 allied
local unions with a combined mem
bership of 12,000. It was active in
the campaign for free textbooks for
I local school children and has par
ticipated in numerous civic drives,
i including the raising of $100,000 for
civilian defense equipment during
World War II.
