A6 0 AQ82 4 K The bidding: South West North East 14 Pass 3 4 Pass 4 <7 Pass 4 4 Pass 6 4 Pass Pass Pass Opening lead: Jack of hearts. Hard luck recruits most of its vic tims from the ranks of the careless. When a hand can be safeguarded against bad breaks one is not in clined to lend a sympathetic ear to the declarer who complains about an unfortunate distribution. Today we have another in the long string of cases in which a player took too much for granted. The final contract was the essence of soundness. Neath’s three-spade call is the best response with hts holding. When an exact description of the strength and type of a hand can be given in one bid it is much superior to a roundabout way of getting there. Nothing is to be gained, therefore, on hands of this type by a temporary bid of two clubs. It is only when neither a three nor a two spade bid gives the exact description that it is neces sary to resort to indirect methods. South fully intended to contract for a slam when he heard the jump (be cause he had considerably more than a trick in excess of his opening bid) but he had some vague ideas of seven and started in that direction by showing the ace of hearts. When North returned to four spades South concluded that partner either did not have the ace of clubs or could not afTord to show it, so he aban doned the big prize and settled for a little slam. Note that had North been able to show his ace without getting above the game level he would have been justified in so do ing. But when it involves passing the game to indicate possession of an ace, additional values should be held. The jack of hearts was opened, covered by the queen, king and ace. Declarer saw that he could get rid of his losing heart on the ace of clubs, so there was nothing to it but the trumps. “Just in case of fire,” he said, "I’ll lay down the ace of trumps.” And the conflagration broke out. A safer way for declarer to have played the hand, it seems to me, would be to cash the king of clubs, enter dummy with the king of dla mands, take his discard and then lead a small trump from dummy, barely covering anything East plays. If East should show out naturally the ace would be played and the rest is routine. The only real risk involved in the suggested line of play is that East will have a singleton diamond and two trumps and that West will win the first trump trick and return a diamond. This I consider a less likely occurrence than East holding all three trumps. (Copyright, 1946, by Charles H. Goren ) Take My Word for It Mirage Words. By FRANK COLBY. A number of familiar and useful words are mispronounced because they seem to be reflections of other similar but unrelated words. This reflection is like a mirage—when you approach it for examination, it simply fades away before your eyes. For example, percolate seems to be a reflexion of circulate, hence the common mispronunciation “PER-kew-late." But percolate is spelled with “-co-” (not “-cu-”) and should be pronounced: PER-koe late. Unguent seems to be a reflection of pungent. But unguent Is cor rectly pronounced: UNG-gwent. Comely is a mirage of homely. But comely should be: KUM-lee. Danish suggests vanish. But the “a” of Danish retains the long sound as in Dane. Say: DAY-nish. Coupon is a mirage of yupon. hence the erroneous “KEW-pcn.” The cou- of coupon, however, is “koo.” as in coup, coupe. Be sure to say: KOOpon.
