Prior to the Pacific phase of World
| War II, the word atoll, to the
i average American, was a more or less
: obscure term confined to geographies,
encyclopedias and such magazines
| as the National Geographic. Of
course, we know what an atoll is, but
i we hardly ever had occasion to use
the word in speaking.
Then, suddenly, the word became
dramatically significant, and it be
gan to come out of our radios with
almost as many different pronuncia
tions as there were broadcasters.
“AY-tole” was the most frequent
mispronunciation, and it is still
heard occasionally on the air. Howt
| ever, it has no dictionary sanction
' that I know of.
A careful check now reveals that
.most broadcasters, lay speakers, and
| members of the armed forces now
accent atoll on the first syllable,
I and rhyme the second syllable with
either “brawl” or “doll,” thus:
; AT-awl, or AT-oll.
The dictionaries also list the word
with the second syllable accented,
as: uh-TOLL (-TOLL to rhyme with
“doll”). But, according to my check,
uh-TOLL is rarely heard in these
days Therefore, for the sake of
uniformity. I recommend AT-awl
: 'or AT-oll).
