There are many situations in the play of a hand and more especially on the defense, which involve sheer guesswork. Where no percentage are available in making the gues: the toss of a coin is as sound t method as any other, and declare should take no pride in the fact tha; it turned up “heads.” There are a certain number of situations, how ever, which appear to be guesses or. the surface, but. which on analyst1 will prove not to be so in fact. Let us look at an example today. The auction was of the one-two three variety which is recommended In no-trump bidding. With an evenly balanced hand and a point count of 17, a no-trump opening is preferable to an introductory club bid. West prosaically led the queen of hearts, dummy played low and East followed with the four, having no reason to manifest enthusiasm over the suit. Declarer took the trick with the ace and then pondered between setting up the spades or the clubs. There, if ever, was an out-and-out guess, inasmuch as the length and texture of both black suits was the same. The coin was duly tossed and de clarer led the king of spades. East lost no time in taking the ace and returning a heart. Declarer refused I to take this trick, but West overtook and cleared the suit and there was no way for declarer to bring in nine tricks without the club suit. The last remaining hope was that East had the ace of clubs, but when this failed to materialize, the contract was aeieatea a trick. Had declarer elected to drive out the ace of clubs first, the hand could have been made, since the long hearts could not have been cashed. However, declarer could not find comfort in the belief that he had made a wrong guess. He actually had made a bad play. By the mere expedient of refusing the first heart trick rather than the second, de clarer could have won the hand. Presumably, the hearts would be continued and declarer takes the second trick. Now he elects to lead a spade and East wins with the ace, but has no heart to return and de clarer is safe. If East has a heart, then it will mean that the original lead was a four-card suit and that only two hearts and two aces can be cashed by the defense. The moral is: Holding two stoppers in the suit led at no-trump, when two important cards must be driven out, declarer should refuse the first trick and take the next two, rather than take the first and refuse the second. D„ Omaha: The hu mane societies urge us to “Be kind to dumb animals.” I understand that the giraffe is the only animal that is voiceless; therefore, why | “dumb animal”? Answer: In the expression “dumb animals,” the word dumb does not mean voiceless. The proper mean 1 ing is: Not having the power of ; speech. Since most deaf-mutes have fully developed vocal cords, and can be taught to speak, it is inaccurate and very unkind to refer to them as being “deaf and dumb.” Let us use the term "deaf-mute.” Or, if the deaf person has been taught to speak, let us say that he is deaf, or, better still, hard of hearing. An understanding ol the personal pro nouns is essential to good English. My pamphlet is used in hundreds ol class rooms because of Its simplicity and com mon sense.
