The cotton industry’ was sick even before the war when ft was upsel by the disappearance of the Indian market. It has suffered the most from the labor shortage. Young folks and veterans alike appear to shun the cotton mills: this oldest of British industries has some of the oldest machinery, in old-fash ioned plants. There is a good supply of raw cdtton—but no spinners. The wool industry, controled throughout the war by the "utility'' scheme which governed domestic consumption, has maintained some of its high-class export trade. The American college girl still gets her l "Sloppy Joe" from How’ick. and the best Harris tweeds are still shipped abroad in limited quantities, i Demand for veterans’ "demob1 suits is expected to be largely satis fied by 1947 and the Board of Trade hopes more labor will be diverted to the vital woollen exports—with a strong trend toward empire pref erence. Due to an abundance of wool, manufacturers have been permitted to commission Italian mills, undam iaged by war and with ample labor. ' to make up the raw materials. Wartime exigencies brought such improvements to the wool industry as shrinkage control, a de-mothing process, and better lightweight tropical uniforms. Nylon, imported from the United States before the war. is now barred by dollar restrictions. A new’ fac tory projected for Wales is held down by labor and equipment short ages. British girls can only dream of nylon stockings with little hope of fulfillment.
