Students Use WAVE Quarters Till Units Are Built About 250 American University student veterans will occupy WAVE quarters D at Massachusetts and Nebraska avenues N.W. pending completion of as many on-campus housing units, it was learned today. The Navy yesterday cleared the way for the emergency housing pro vision by declaring the barracks, which housed up to 3,000 women reservists during the war, surplus. The Federal Public Housing Author ity promptly arranged for a 60-day permit for use of two of the build ings for homeless American Univer sity students. With the 250 on-campus units a month from completion, the uni versity. which opens September 26, had been faced with a serious hous ing shortage. Dr. Paul F. Douglass, president, said the arrangement would provide a housing solution for the school’s expanded enrollment this year. Oliver C Winston, director of the general field office of FPHA. said that after American University stu dents are moved into their own facilities he would negotiate for long-term use of the barracks for students at other universities. Di vided into cubicles, the dormitories contain much of the furniture for merly used by the WAVES, and will be easily put in shape for student use, Mr. Winston said.
