Goodwin, director of the United States Employment Service, declared yesterday. Mr. Goodwin, National Housing Administrator Wyatt and Retrain ing and Re-employment Adminis trator Erskin^ discussed the vet erans' twin problem* of housing an# jobs at a panel discussion presented by the Women's National Press Club. Linking the two problems. Gen. Erskine pointed out that lack of housing in some communities had prevented veterans from going to those communities, even though jobs were available there. Looking at the employment pic ture from a different angle, Mr. Wyatt warned that a shortage of skilled labor in the building trades might become the “No. 2 bottle neck" after materials unless com munities take steps to increase the training of apprentices. Mr. Goodwin reported that while the overran picture of veterans’ em ployment "looks good," difficult and complex veterans' job problems still remain to be solved. He cited the problems of veterans who returned to old jobs or took the first, one that came along and are now looking for better-paving work, veterans who had no work experience before going into the sendee, veterans w’ho learned a trade in the armed forces for which no civilian counterpart exists, veterans whose prewar occu pations no longer exist because of technological changes, and physi cally disabled veterans. On housing, Mr. Wyatt said he thought the record of 607,000 homes and apartments under construction and 287.000 completed since the first of the year was “pretty good.” He predicted that the latest Govern ment cuts in nonhousing building would make it possible to start thousands of new homes this fall and to complete thousands of new homes before winter.
