Victory for Redskins Seen if They Shackle Bears' Kavanaugh By Lewis F. Atchison Bear steak with Halas sauce will be served at the Redskin wigwam Monday—maybe. It air depends on whether the Tribe can stop Ken Kavanaugh in Sunday's shootin' session at Baltimore, says Line Coach Herman Ball. Ball has tailed the Bears as diligently as a corre spondence school flatfoot for years and is rated one of the National Football League's top scouts. As for that report about the Bears being four deep in every position, hah. forget it. They're only three deep in 10 positions. “Moon” Mul lins got himself sold after the ex hibition game at Akron, leaving only Ray McLean and Dante Magnani at left half. True, the Bears still have such characters as George McAfee. Hugh Gallerneau, Sid Luckman and Pa" Perkins, but Ball stubbornly insists the Skins can tie 'em in a sack and toss 'em over the left shoul der if they put the skids under Kav anaugh. Kavanaugh is the long distance operator In the Bears' passing game. Ball says he resembles a cross be tween a trtiant trapeze performer and the Washington Monument when he grabs onto a pass. You al most need a stepladder to stop him and even then he'll get nine out of 10 throws. It makes no difference who is draped around his neck, arms or shoulders, he gets the ball. ‘‘He makes you feel that even if your man does intercept the pass you've got to match Kavanaugh for the ball before you can have it," says Ball. For short throws, the Bears are using George Wilson. Five yards down the field, two steps over and— zingo, it's Luckman to Wilson again. This is a common Bear habit, but they need at least 10 of these passes to score, whereas one to Kava naugh will put six points on the board. Luckman is throwing with all his prewar skill, according to Ball and isn't lugging an extra tummv on the field with him.
