| Byrd to Oppose Delay
j In Reducing Number
Oi Senate Committees
Chairman Byrd of the Senate
Rules Committee, served notice to
day he will oppose any move in the
new Congress to rescind the reor
ganization of congressional com
mittees in the interest of more effi
cient legislating.
The Virginia Senator said if the
members of Congress "take the bene
fits of the reorganization act, such
as the pay increase and retirement
system, and then don't go through
with the other features, they are
going to be severely condemned.”
The reorganization plan calls for
a substantial reduction in the num
ber of committees both in the House
and Senate. The merging of com
mittees will deprive many members
of chairmanships, and since Con
gress adjourned there have been re
i ports that a fight may develop in
January to postpone the stream
lining operation.
Senator Byrd said a delay of a!
few weeks may be necessary to carry
out the difficult task of reassigning!
i members to the merged committees,
but that "anything leading to a
permanent laying aside of the pro
gram will be unpopular."
Senate Majority Leader Barkley
also expressed the opinion today, the
committee reorganization plan is en
titled to a fair trial and should be1
put into effect.

Stucco Leaks.
Q The upper part of my house
is of steel reinforced stucco with a
wood frame trim. We have been
troubled with leaks in the down
stairs rooms. We have had cracks
in the stucco caulked three or four
i times. What type of siding would
you recommend putting over the
; stucco, or is there some other way
of preventing the leaks? The power
part of the house is face brick.
A, I believe the answer to your
problem is not additional siding, but
repair of the leaks. Look for leaks
around window and door frames,
also at the joint where the stucco;

Small Cracks on Cupboard Doors.
Q. We are refinishing our kitchen
and would like to know what could
be done to remove the hairline
cracks on the cupboard doors? i
What is the cause of this?
A. You may have applied the fin
ish without taking the precaution of
cleaning off all traces of grease be
fore working, or you did not dull the
gloss of the old finish. There is al
ways a film of grease on kitchen
surfaces, which will spoil a paint job
if not first removed. Smooth down
the surface with sandpaper, and
wipe off the dust with a cloth
dampened with turpentine. Be
careful of fire, and open the win
dows. Then put on one or two coats
of enamel undercoater and finish
with one coat of top quality enamel
of the same brand as the under
coater.
