Col. Fielder Assigned
To Georgetown U.
As Air ROTC Head
Lt. Col. Leo E. Fielder, who flew
in 80 combat bombing missions over
North Africa and Europe, has been
assigned to Georgetown University
by the Army Air Force as senior in
command of a newly installed air
ROTC, the university announced
today.
Installation of the air ROTC at
Georgetown, it was said, is part of
a Nation-wide program being
launched by the AAF.
The new unit will begin function
ing as an advanced course in Octo
ber, the university said, on the sairfe
basis as the new advanced infantry
ROTC which will begin operations
at the same time under Col. John
C. Whitcomb, assigned to George
town early last summer.
Two other AAF officers, yet un
named, will be detailed as assistant
instructors later.
Col. Fielder. 31, whose home is in
Fort Worth, Tex., now is recruiting
senior students for the new air
unit. As in the advanced infantry
course, qualifications include one
year of previous military service or
completion of the basic course.
Many of the more than 1.800 vet
erans at Georgetown formerly
served with the AAF.
A former commander of the 47th
Bombardment Group, Col. Fielder
entered the service as a flying cadet
in 1941 and got his wings the next
year at Kelly Field, Tex. He went
overseas with the 47th Group in
1942 shortly after the invasion of
North Africa. The group received
two presidential citations for its
bombings which included opera
tions over Sicily, Italy and in the
invasion of Southern France.
Col. Fielder returned to the
United States i in November, 1944.
and before his present assignment
he had rejoined the 47th Bombard
ment Group now stationed at Lake
Charles. La. He was awarded the
Silver Star, the Distinguished Fly- |
ing Cross and Air Medal.

president of Class 9. Disabled Vet
erans National Service Officers
Course, calling lack of housing for
married veterans at American Uni
versity “extremely critical.’’
Declaring the situation required
“definite and immediate action," Mr.
Agostinelli explained that more than
half the members of the class are
married and "find it impossible to
find quarters for their families.”
He said the situation was so crit
ical in several cases that veterans
will be forced to give up their re
habilitation courses unless housing
is found.
In one case, he said, the wife and
four children of a member of the:
class are being evicted from their
home.
