Whitman Trouble With Garage Roof Boards. During the winter the roof boards in my brick garage, which has a flat roof, frosted up very much on the ends. Consequently, these boards are deteriorating. I have two air ventilators, one on each side. Do you think the trouble could be checked if I were to put up a ceiling of insulating board? It is possible that the ventilators are not large enough to move the air effectively. I assume the vent lators are of the louvre variety in stalled in the walls. The installa tion of a roof ventilator should help. A ceiling of insulating wallboard may also help correct the condi tion, but to prevent the possible penetration of vapor through it into space above the board, coat the back of it with asphalt paint. Building Aide To Attend Parley On Standard Code A standard building code designed to cut down the confusion inherent in the multitude of different con struction rules and regulations main tained by American cities will be discussed at a convention of the Building Officials Conference of America starting next Monday at Memphis, Tenn., at which Robert H. Davis. District building inspec tions director, will attend. Drafting of such a code is expected to require about eight* months. Walker S. Lee, Rochester, N. Y., said today. If a basic code is .adopted by the majority of American cities, Mr. Lee said, home and building con struction would be speeded at a great saving in man hours would be possible. Optimistic Over Adoption. In an Associated Press interview, Mr. Lee said he was optimistic over prospects that the conference's pro posed code would be generally ac cepted. Describing the construction indus try and building administrators as “hot for unification,’’ Mr. Lee said, “I believe that local legislators will be -willing and anxious to co-oper ate wuth industry, and thus lower costs and expedite construction by speeding up building which now may be delayed by the need of investi gations, and so forth.” Standard performance tests would effect great savings to material and equipment manufacturers, the con ference head pointed out, because "when a new- material or a new mode of construction is approved according to the method set up in the basic code it will, in effect, be approved by all cities adopting the basic code.” In addition, Mr. Lee said, a stand ard code would “relieve architects, engineers, estimators and contrac (See STANDARD CODE Page~B-4.) Gadgets Chemical Cleaner Restores Masonry; New Mildew Remedy By Hilson Munsey If there are any masonary sur faces in the house or on the out side of the house that need clean ing there is a preparation that Is sold expressly for this purpose. It will remove all stains and restore the original masonry color and it is also very useful in blending the ap pearance of old masonry into that of new when additions or repairs have been made. This cleaner can be used on any unglazed masonry including granite, limestone, terra cotta, brick tile and marble. Being a chemical that dissolves the dirt and stains on the surface of the masonry there is no danger that the surface 'will be scratched or roughened. The surface is cov ered by brushing the cleaner onto the masonry with an ordinary paint brush and this applies to both verti-1 cal and horizontal surfaces. This i covering should be done on areas that can be handled easily and no attempt should be made to cover the entire area of the surface to be! treated. After the chemical has1 been given about 10 minutes in which to do its work the surface should be washed ofT with clear water applied with a scrubbing brush. If the application is allowed to stay on longer th?n 10 minutes no bad results will follow because the chemical does its work in 10 or 15 minutes and then stops. It is packed in 10, 25 and 50 pound containers. Mildew. The summer is the worst time for mildew to make its appearance, par ticularly if the weather is very humid. If the house is kept well ventilated, that will help to prevent mildew, but even then it is better to take the necessary steps to make < SeeTGA D GET S ,P a g eB-3.) Wadsworth Wood The average person knows that ships and boats are caulked to make them water-tight, but probably not one in a thousand knows that all houses wnich are properly built are likewise caulked to make them weather-tight. Caulking is so important to the house that in a pamphlet published by the United States Bureau of Standards it is stated that a solid job of caulking is practically as im portant as painting. Every house has thousands of joints where board meets board, where window frames are set in the walls, where doorways are installed and chimneys or pipes come through the roof. In many cases these joints will be filled by the painting, but around the window and door frames and other large openingi caulking is essential. Putty and Lead Useless. Caulking compound should be of the nondrying variety. Putty and lead are useless because they dry out and become brittle and eventu J ally fall out of place or shrink so that their efficiency is lost. There are several splendid compounds on the market which retain their elas ticity for years and it is this type that the homeowner should use. The compound may be applied in two ways, either with a putty knife or with a caulking gun which has a fine nozzle and which will squirt the material into the crack to be filled. The compound comes in both light and dark colors so that the line it shows will not mar the appear ance of the painting. Even the inexperienced house owner will understand that although a house may have three good coats : of paint applied to it, rain and mois j ture will get through any fissure i which the paint cannot completely close, and in so doing will start de tSee WOOD, Page B-9J ” 71 Home Loans in Area For Veterans Approved Seventv-one home loans were ap i proved or confirmed by the Wash ington Loan Guarantee Office of the Veterans’ Administration during the week ending September 20, the regional office reported today.
