Pass 3 <7 Pass 4 A Pass 4 NT Pass h o Pass 5 A Pass Pass Pass Opening lead, ace of clubs. One of the advantages of blasting your way to a slam, as opposed to the scientific treatment, is the diffi culty presented to the defenders in their choices of opening leads. Many a slam, bid In the splashing manner, has succeeded merely because the opening leader was up against an out-and-out guess and didn’t come through, whereas a more fortunate selection might have resulted In the cashing of the first two tricks. Whether one uses cue bidding or Blackwood he is up against the dis advarn«<?e of permitting the defense to suggest leads to partner by dou bling the artificial bid on the way up. In todays hand. South found it rather easy to make an opening lead from a combination that is normally avoided, by reason of Inferences drawn from partner's failure to act during the bidding. West's response of two hearts is ; sound. His hand is not quite good enough for a Jump to three spades and yet too good for a mere single raise. He must, therefore, arrange to make two bids. After East’s raise to three hearts, it is our view that he erred in jumping to four spades. His hand is not strong enough to war rant a jump and it would have been i sufficient for him to bid only three spades, which would have plainly j expressed a desire to go places, in .view of the trouble he previously i to bid hearts. His partner would | then have been content with con ! trading for game. After the Jump, East chose to resort to Blackwood jand when he learned that partner i bad only one ace, he subsided, but | the damage had been done. Had South made a neutral lead, the contract would have been ful filled. But it seemed from the bid ding that a minor suit had to be opened, since declarer’s side obvi ously had the heart suit under con trol and might obtain discards. South elected to lead the ace of clubs (a diamond would have produced the same result). His reasoning was, "Surely partner must have enough diamonds to have doubled the Black wood five-diamond bid. Why did he not do so? Evidently he can stand the lead of the only other suit I j might choose, clubs.’’ Incidentally, if North had held nothing in clubs so that he could not | stand the lead of the suit, it would have been proper strategy for him ■ to double the five-diamond bid in : an effort to obtain that lead against the final contract. (Copyright, 1846, by Ch.rles H. Goren,) Nature's Children EUROPEAN HORNET. (Vespa crabro.) By LILLIAN COX ATHEY. ; Wise persons give hornets ti | right of way. When these pionec papermakers are in no mood fc delays, they are likely to use thei red-hot needle on any creature im peding their activities. These giant hornets were Jntro j duced into this country over 50 j years ago. They are much larger j and more fierce than our native j hornets. The immigrant is not j only well established in the United I States, but it is increasing rapidly | in numbers. | Giant hornets are. excellent ar j chitects, building nests similar to !! those constructed by our common hornets, but with larger cells. All the workers are females. They i j apparently have chosen softer and less hard building materials to work with as they are seen at work on decaying logs, stumps and seasoned ’ wood, obtaining small portions for , | their shingles. As soon as they return to the ; site where building activities are , in progress, the pellet of wood'is [ chewed, carefully mixed with a . fummy waterproof secretion before ’ it is spread thin on the growing i structure. The result is a building paper of russet or yellow color, which soon fades, though the paper | is tough and lasting. You will recognize this hornet by its deep russet-colored head and front of body. Black and gold markings decorate the hair coat. Its manner is more decisive and its demeanor conveys strength and a one-track mind. Take My Word for It By FRANK CORBY. Saturday's Smorgasbord. Newark: Recently Kay Kyser re ferred to the Habanera from “Car men.” as “HAH-buh-NAIRuh.” Please discuss.—A. D. % Answer: Habanera Is Spanish for “of Havana.” It also is the name of a slow, capricious dance which Cubans borrowed from Africa. The | famous aria from “Carmen" is writ ten in the tempo of the dance, hence its name. The correct pronunciation is AH-bah-NAY’rah. Note. Initial “h” is never pronounced in Spanish, Italian or French. West Los Angeles: “I cant find meaning or origin of “bad” used as a prefix to many German place names. Can you help?—R. M. H.
