Novel Ignores Christian Beliefs, But Shows Spirit of Reverence KING JESUS By Robert Graves. (Creative Age; $3.) Although this novel has received a recommendation from the Relig ious Boole Club, it seems to me like ly that it will anger some religious people. There is a great deal in it which rune counter to the teachings of the Christian churches. None theless, no one will be able to accuse Robert Graves of an ir reverent spirit o r sensational methods. He contradicts the doctrine of the divine birth of Jesus, but, of Mr. Grtni Jesus Himseii, ms interpretation is, as he says in a commentary, that Re was "more uncompromising, more consistent and more loyal to his God than even most Christians allow.” The book is a scholarly effort to make a logical life history out of the myths and legends about Jesus' existence. Hebrew, Aramaic. Egyp tian, Greek and Roman mythologies overlay one another in the totality of the Jesus story. Mr. Graves has undertaken to evaluate the great body of them in their relation to one another. To that end, he tells his story through the mouth of Agabus the Decapolitan and sets the date of the telling as A.D. 93. As he puts it, the doctrine of the divine birth “cannot be traced earlier than the Uncle Joshua Beene 'Ruled' in Texas JOSHUA BEENE AND GOD By Jewel Gibson (Random House; $2.50.) Reviewed bv J. N. HAMILTON. Judge Joshua Ebenezer Beene ruled Spring Creek. He and God and the little black books into which Josh Beene wrote the sins of the Spring Creek folk held sway with an Indomitable will that none could contest. Josh Beene was a salty character—so salty that many, per haps, would judge him slightly blasphemous. But then, Josh Beene only called down his Lord three times to talk to Him. All his life,! this self-styled prophet of Jehovah j “fit'’ the Baptists, the Holy Rollers and backsliders from his church, the j Church of Christ. How he accom plished his ••victories” and ruled with a hand of iron untempered With the velvet glove makes whimsi-j eal. back-woodsv, oftimes hilarious reading. It is evident throughout the book that Jewel Gibeon. who hails from Texas, is thoroughly familiar with her characters. The story of Josh Beene is one that would fall flat had it not been told by some one who knew the characters intimately had lived among them and studied them. Readers not familiar with the world’s Uncle Josh Beenes would call them unbelievable. They exist, and Miss Gibson has drawn them with an understanding pen. isecond century A.D.;” hence it is possible for him to attribute to ■ Agabus, with all innocence, the ; theory which he has worked out. That theory is indicated by his title. He has Agabus report that Jesus was really the mortal king of the Jews, the legal heir to Herod's throne. He was. says Agabus-Graves. the son of Herod's son, Prince Antlpater, who, at the suggestion of the high priest of Jerusalem, con tracted a secret marriage with Mary, who was a temple ward Antipater was executed by his jealous father before the marriage was acknow ledged, and Mary sought protec tion with Joseph, to whom she had previously been betrothed. Jesus, made aware of His royal 'descent, was duly, though secretly,i 'annotated by the high priest's 'party. He was. however, a prophet, not a politician. He had the gifts of the prophet—God spoke through His mouth, He was capable of con trolling and swaying His hearers. He had the power of healing by faith. He undertook to purify the religious practices of His people rather than to make Himself king Mr. Graves carries through the whole story of Jesus’ public teach ing in this manner. Most of the episodes of the Christian faith come into his story, but with altered ; context. In his account of the death, for instance, he has Jesus seek martyTdom according to Zech ariah’s prophecy of the Worthless Shepherd, whose truth was recog nized only when he had been slain for his folly. Judas is consequently held guiltless of betrayal. Pilate,: aware of Jesus’ royal birth, offers Him Rome’s backing in His kingship. When Jesus refuses, Pilate then makes a deal with the reigning Herod, agreeing to crucify the right ful heir in return for a bribe. I have no wish to offend any one,! but I found this book more interest ing than any of the other novels re cently done on the life of Christ. It probably will be difficult for my readers to believe that a work which goes so directly counter to the teachings of Christ’s churches can also be reverent in spirit, but such this one is. The best test will be for you to read it yourself and see. M.-C. R. New Mystery Novels Best Detective Stories of the Year, edited by David C. Cooke. (Dutton.)
